Yesterday a friend of mine asked me if it would be better for her to go to the gym for only 30 minutes after work or not at all. Wholeheartedly I said, "30 minutes!" It sort of made me chuckle, but then I thought, she must not be the only one thinking she has to do it all or it's not worth it.
The all or none approach does not apply since anything is better than nothing when it comes to fitness. Not only is doing something active on most days good for our fitness but it's also good for our minds. To me, it's a lot easier to keep up with a constant routine (even if the duration varies) than starting back from square one. So even if you're just doing something for 20 minutes, that is still something and it will make working out for 30 minutes the next day, and 40 minutes the next day, seem like a much easier task. So lose the all or nothing approach because when it comes to your health, anything is something.

1That's a really good point. Too often if I don't have much time to get a workout in I just won't bother. It's much better to do SOMETHING as opposed to giving up entirely.
2well to some, working out for just 30 minutes is a hassle. You have to drive to the gym, park, change, work out, change again, and shower...
3I agree with TidalWave. Yes, working out for a short time is better than nothing, but I feel like I've wasted my time if I spend longer getting to the gym than being in it.
4I read on LifeHacker that "one push-up a day" is a great idea. It sounds stupid at first, I mean, how good could one push-up do, right?
But! How many push-ups did you do last year? Over 365?
5Good point. I sometimes get caught up in my "routine" and figure if I can't do the whole thing, it's not worth it to do anything. I usually have to talk myself into putting in some effort to do a partial workout. It is definitely better than doing nothing at all and I always feel better afterward.
6I definitely need to get rid of this "all or nothing mentality". Sometimes I feel like if I don't have time to do my hour of cardio along with abs and whatnot, there's no point in going. That needs to stop though, because 30 minutes just biking is definitely better than not going because I don't have 1.5hrs to spare.
7i agree, i try to say to myself 'just do 30 minutes', then usually i end up doing more once i've started, but either way at least a little something is better than doing nothing at all...sometimes i just grumble to myself, 'just do it!' lol, corny i know...
8I've always thought the same way as Fit. But then again, my gym is about 2 mins from my house so it's not a hassle for me to go for just 30 mins. I'll always go, even if it's for a short period of time because I still feel better after I do.
9Every little bit helps!
