If you've recently gotten engaged or know that a wedding is in the distant future for you, it's never too early to start thinking about getting fit for the big day. Not only do you want to look your best, but it's great to get in the habit of living a healthy lifestyle before your wedding, so you'll have a long life to share with your partner.
Here are some things to start thinking about:
- If you're looking to lose weight, you can meet with a dietitian. They can help you come up with a safe and healthy eating plan that will be nutritious and low in calories.
- If you're looking to tone up specific areas of your body (like your upper arms and back) you can hire a personal trainer. They'll be able to show you exercises for each area you're concerned about.
- You can also just do toning and strengthening exercises on your own. This Starter Arms video is a great routine that's sure to work every muscle in your upper body. Also, there are a lot of DVDs that you may enjoy.
What else can you start doing? To find out read more.
- If you're looking to lose weight, you can start including more cardio in your routine. You can join a gym and use the cardio machines, and since the weather is getting warmer, you can walk, jog, hike, or ride your bike outside. To see results, you want to do at least 30 minutes of cardio at least three times a week.
- Exercise with your partner. Not only will it keep you both healthy, but it's another way you can spend time together.
The great thing about all of these ideas is that not only will exercising regularly and eating more healthy help you get in shape for the big day, but you'll have more energy to plan the wedding — a pleasant side effect of working out.

I have been doing lots of cardio here lately and I really can notice a difference. Everytime I go, I make sure to burn 200 calories on the treadmill or elepitcal or both and I try to go 3-5 times a week.
1Then I usually lift weights 3 times a week...and hoenstly I CAN notice a difference!
And my boyfriend can too
I'm all about this wedding or not.
2Hiring a dietitian & a personal trainer are totally outside my budget. Walking the dogs around the neighborhood, however, is just the right price!
3If only I had a wedding to go to...not too many of those in college
4The whole point of this blog is to not procrastinate! That's why I read her every day!!! What? There are newly engaged women out there eating cake and watching TV??? Oh no they didn't.
5I think this is harder to keep up with when you get closer to the date. With appointments and stress I find that I get more sedentary when stressed. luckily I don't think I need to lose weight to look good on my wedding day. I'm already happy with who I am and already lead a healthy life.
6I actually have my sister's wedding to be at in August, but I'm losing weight for myself, not just for the sake of the wedding.
7If someone is really worried about how they look wouldn't they already be working out and watching what they eat. Surely you wouldn't lose weight and tone up just for one day of your life (the wedding day) it should be for all days
8yes, but SkinnyMarie, you already SKINNY.
LOL
9get real, ElissaM, it's all about the motivation....you don't necessarily have be really worried about how you look, but on your wedding day you just want to look VERY good and that helps you with the motivation part....and maybe it can help you get used to a healthier way of life (especially if you start planning your wedding year and a half in advance)
10I am thin, not skinny. When I tell people how much I weigh they are shocked. I got this nickname in college because I guess one of the wh*res in pretty woman that was found in a dumpster was skinny marie, and it stuck.
11I'll never forget, my grandmother (she's a seamstress) was doing a dress fitting for me and her only comments were, "Grow your hair out. And lose two pounds."
So much pressure to lose weight for a wedding... you should be fit for your health, not just for one day.
12LOL SkinnyMarie.
13That's funny (in a good way).
I should clarify that in no way was I a wh*re.
14My wedding's in 18 days and for the past 2 months I've been so crazy busy i havent' had TIME to go to the gym!
15I'm not engaged yet - but I hope to be in maybe a year. So I'm starting early. I know that when I'm trying to plan my wedding it will be hard to try to lose weight too! I've lost 20lbs so far and hope to lose about 20 more!
I don't tell my bf my motivation, though, don't want to scare him off!
16awww congrats ElleJay!!
17i intend to be healthy whenever that *big* day comes, but in the mean time i work out for myself. not for any other person or even my boyfriend. i really wish he'd work out more tho. :\
18I think working out with your partner is great. It's a great way to work out wedding stress and you're both getting in shape and spending time together.
19When I got engaged, I only had like 7 months until the wedding. I didn't really have to lose weight, so I just focused on strength training and I lost maybe a pound or two. I just had to make sure my back was very toned because my dress showed it off. I think it's ridiculous that women buy their dresses 2 or 3 sizes too small and diet like crazy to fit into them. It's just one day, for crying out loud. If you are going to lose weight and get healthy, do it for YOU, not just for the day.
20I think women like to get in shape for the big day because you get a LOT of pictures taken, and they will be around for the rest of your life! And most women wear gowns that cover their legs, and only show shoulders and arms....so they like to try and spot tone.
21i got engaged in november and my wedding isn't for another 2 years. while i haven't been able to plan much, my first thought was, "well, at least i can get a jump start on my bride workouts!"
heh.
22I was engaged for 18 months and joined weight watchers to look good in my dress...however, the stress got the better of me. While I did lose weight, my body wouldn't let go of all the weight I wanted because of the stress I was under. It needed that reserve. I am now 15 pounds lighter than I was on my wedding day 10 months ago but still on WW and doing the same amount of activity. Make sure that you understand your body 's reaction to stress. I would have loved to be the weight I am now last year, but it was for me not physically possible (or perhaps I should blame my mother and bridesmaids!!!).
So, my advice is just be happy with your body and don't try to alter it for one day...it won't let you!
