If you find the unnatural color of many sports drinks unappealing, you might be interested in trying coconut water.
They don't call it "nature's sports drink" for nothing. A cup of coconut water contains about 600 milligrams of potassium (that's more than a banana), as well as some calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sugar.
The liquid found inside young green coconuts is thin, almost clear, and can have a slight almond flavor. Coconut water should not be confused with coconut milk. Coconut water contains no saturated fat and has only 45 calories per cup to coconut milk's 552.
The coolest thing about coconut water is that it has the same electrolyte balance as blood. Dubbed the "fluid of life," it was used as a substitute for intravenous plasma during World War II.
You can cut the top off a young coconut with a meat cleaver and drink the juice. Or you can find bottled coconut water, but it just might be mixed with sweetener. Drink up!

ohhh, there is a vegan restaurant near my work that has young coconut on their menu. They cut it for you and will even deliver them... my coworker got one once. I'll have to try it next time!
1This stuff is a LIFESAVER if you do bikram yoga!
2oh my goodness. that sounds fantastic! i just wonder where i could get it
3PS - that's clearly another reason to live in hawaii
4We have this in the fridge all the time. It's perfect on hot summer days. Sometimes I put it in the freezer and it becomes an instant, all-natural popsicle.
5It is one of the things I have loved about living in Miami and spending so much time in the tropics. I walk around any neighborhood, find one of these and open it with a machete. So yum when the coconut has been in the freezer or on ice for a bit.
6mmmmmm I had some of this on my vacay a couple of years ago
7i've never tried it, but coconut water is also supposed to be excellent help for a hangover.
8wow, i had no idea it was THAT healthy...its tastes really good too.
9Jackie Chan drinks this everyday!
10OoOooooOOoo this sounds fab!!
11Coconuuuuut!
(I keep hearing Harry Belafonte here... *giggles*)
12This is one of the best reasons to go on vacation. I'll be sipping these down this summer.
13SO cool! Never heard these things about coconut water. I am interested to try it.
14wow, this is fantastic! i'm definitely going to give this a try
15water? it's called milk.
16Allytta, coconut milk is what you get when you shred the white coconut meat and squeeze out the juice. Coconut water is a clear liquid that you get from green, unripened coconuts.
You can also find canned coconut water in some areas - it's packaged just like a soda, with a pop-top. Asian food markets or West Indian food stores will have it around.
My family's from the Caribbean, and our favorite way to drink coconut water is over ice, with a little bit of rum - Mount Gay is best, but Bacardi's good too. Give it a try sometime!
17That sounds yummy!
18Wow, sounds yummy. I hate sports drinks, but I would definitely give coconut water a try. I always thought it had a lot of calories, but obviously I was thinking of coconut milk (552 calories per cup?? YIKES!)
19coconut water is the best! you can buy it at Whole Foods anywhere. in the city i have found it at rainbow market. get the coco water in the box, not the can. truly the best hangover cure ever.
20I saw this fit woman at Whole Foods buying O.N.E coconut water and thought to myself that I should try whatever she is having. WOW! It is amazing! The only downside is that it is $$$
