So everyday we hear that we're supposed to be eating whole grains for our health. It's always, "whole grain this" and "whole grain that." But let's get down to the basics. Which foods are considered a whole grain anyway? To make the guessing process a little easier I've gathered a list of the most common whole grains and flours (when consumed in a form that includes the bran, germ and endosperm) used in foods today.
They are:
- Amaranth
- Barley
- Buckwheat
- Corn, including whole cornmeal and popcorn
- Millet
- Oats, including oatmeal
- Quinoa
- Rice, both brown rice and colored rice
- Rye
- Sorghum (also called milo)
- Teff
- Triticale
- Wheat, including varieties such as spelt, emmer, farro, einkorn, Kamut, durum and forms such as bulgur, cracked wheat and wheatberries
- Wild rice

mmmm I bought some yummy brown rice yesterday!
1Most wheat bread is not even whole grain. beware when buying if it doesn't look like its whole grain it probably isn't
2what about wheat germ? fitsugar - can you explain what it is?
3Bulgur is so yummy when prepared right.
4I'm obsessed with rye bread!
5What about couscous? I buy the organic fair-trade couscous and it smells whole grain-y, but it doesn't say.
I've heard of whole grain couscous but have never seen it.
6i love rye bread. it's the only kind of bread i eat!
7Couscous isn't a grain, it's pasta. It's refined, like most pasta is. It just looks like a grain b/c it's so small. I personally LOVE my brown rice...I eat it instead of white rice all the time. And if you have never tried quinoa, I highly recommend it. It's absolutely delicious!
8I love brown rice and I've been meaning to get some quinoa.
9I love brown rice.
10Rye bread is mostly bleached white flour...there is not very much rye flour in it. It really isn't any better for you than white bread.
