I tend to think of myself as relatively flexible when it comes to others but when it comes to gym behaviors, ugh, I have some serious pet peeves. The thing is, the gym is a communal place, which means we all are sharing and one a-hole talking loudly on his phone about his wild night can really ruin the experience for everyone.
To avoid being that guy/girl, keep in mind a few gym etiquette tips:
- Wiping off your sweat from equipment -- Good if you already do it, gross if you don't.
- Returning equipment to its original place -- Your mother is not picking up after you here and it's not fair for the next person looking for the 15 lbs weights to have to search for them.
- Keep noise to a minimum -- We're all working out hard here, so major disturbances like grunting and slamming weights together are really not necessary.
- Cutting in Line -- How old are we here? Cutting in line is rude and childish. Wait your turn and think about asking if you can work-in with someone else's sets.
- Mind how much space you're taking up -- Don't talk on your cell phone loud (or at all really) and pace back and forth. Don't use equipment as a place to keep your things, someone may be waiting to use that bench your crap is sitting on.
Basically, as cheesy as it sounds, the Golden Rule applies even when you're at the gym: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Gross with the sweat thing...i would tell someone to do that if i saw they didnt wipe it off but at my gym they are pretty good about it
1The cell phone thing pisses me off to no end! I can't stand being on the treadmill and having someone next to me on their cell phone chatting away. What's the point of coming to the gym?
2And another pet peeve...guys who grunt really loud while doing their sets, then slamming the weights!
3Cell phones and grunting top my list of pet peeves!
4Oh my about the sweat thing...gross! Lol...
5OMG - there is a guy at my gym who grunts soooooo loudly... it's really gross!
6Don't be the person who refuses to stay home when you're sneezing and coughing everywhere- and then insist on getting on the elliptical or the treadmill that is clearly surrounded by people- if you're an incubus of viral plague, please, please stay away, it's nasty. OR...use a towel to cough into, don't just cough all over yourself.
7Don't be chatting with me at the gym!!! I'm trying to focus here and need to stay in my own head
In return, I solemly promise to not hum along with the tune on my IPOD
8thats SO gross when people don't clean off the equipment so i always clean it before i get on and again when i get off.
9Oh I have another BAD one.. B.O.!!! I'm a personal trainer at a gym and we have a member who NEVER wears deodorant and stinks up the whole cardio floor while he's out there. He stinks so bad ppl complain about it ALL the time. It's soo gross.
10These are great tips, especially for us socially awkward people who want to get in shape and not offend
11m I always worry I am taking too much time at water fountain if I fill my water bottle so if someone is behind me i try not filling beyond the count of ten.
any one else have thoughts on this?
12amycasey, our gym says you are supposed to let the person go and wait to fill up your water bottle till after they are done. but, that's just cause we started having problems with it, so it's up to you, really.
13Last night at the gym I saw a guy who was trying to use 3 machines at once. He was on one machine, and had his water bottle on the next one over to "save" it for himself. Then he'd rush over to another machine, and back again for each set. So completely arrogant.
14He ees, how you say??? "Eqeepment peeg"... puh! I speet him
15Also Respect The Set Reps! I hate when people slip into a machine in between sets...but those are also the people who don't seem to do sets themselves...
16GRR there's this lady that uses the cross trainer (its my fave machine too) and she sweats a whole lot (it gets EVERYWHERE) and she doesnt bother to clean up! it is frikkin gross! plus, during peak hours, theres a 20min time limit, but she just continues using the machine for HOURS! its infuriating.
17The cell phone thing kills me too! I listen to my IPOD but it still bugs me because most of the time they are yelling into the phone then I have to turn up the music to tune it out.
