Drew Has Her Own Mat — Do You?

Drew Barrymore is into the mind/body fitness connection. She celebrated Easter Sunday with a morning yoga class. Yoga not only relieves stress, but if you go to a challenging class, you'll end up toning your entire body. What a great way to start getting in shape for the Summer.

Drew is smart to bring her own mat since public studio mats are filled with other people's germs and sweat. Using a studio mat is a great way to up your chances of getting sick, not to mention they usually smell really funky. Studios are supposed to wash them, but who knows how often they really get cleaned.

Since your mat is like your own personal sanctuary, if you don't have your own, now is the time to pick one up. If you want to know which ones are my favorites then read more

Manduka Black Mat ($79.50): Though expensive, if you practice a lot, it's worth every penny. It's thicker and denser than any mat out there, so if you find that your knees, hip bones, or head hurt when you press them into a thin yoga mat, you won't feel any pain while pressing into this one.

Manduka PurpleLite Travel Mat ($57): This one is slightly thinner than the Black Mat, but still thicker than your average sticky mat.

This may seem like a lot of money, but thinner yoga mats are about $20 to $30, and they usually end up peeling and deteriorating, so you have to keep buying new ones. Since these Manduka Mats are so durable, they'll last for your entire lifetime, so in the end they'll save you money.

Fit's Tips: If you're not into yoga, these mats are great for Pilates as well.

I have a $20 mat from target and have used it 2-3 times a week in Pilates classes for about a year now (in addition to using it for yoga about once a week) and it has not deteriorated or peeled.

I have a mat from lululemon...they come in really nice color combinations plus there are indicators on the mat so you can improve your positions...plus its quite thick. I forgot how much I paid for it though...around $60?

I have both of these mats and they are amazing! I practice yoga 5-6 days a week, and I went through about 4 mats before I settled on these. My wrists don't hurt as much as with the thinner mats, and they still look and feel brand new!

I love my cheap Target mats. I have a bright orange one and a pretty lavender one, so I can coordinate Sticking out tongue.

I've been practicing for years and went through many mats before finally purchasing a Manduka. There is no better mat, the cheaper ones all deteriorate if you practice daily. The only other option that seems to be a great purchase is a rug.

yeah that price tag is a bit steep. I know that you can go to TJ Maxx and Marshall's and stores like that and get good mats for around $20.00. The one I personally carry is (like many posters) the $20.00 deal from Target.

I have one. I kind of wanted a pilates one though because I heard they were thicker, but I don't know if that's actuall true.

I would pay that much for a high-quality, super-plush mat but mine is thicker than that one and it was about $20. Better research, please.

I have a thick one that I bought from a sporting goods place and paid around $30 for. I teach a fitness class 2-3 times a week, and have had this one for 9 months without any signs of deterioration (and I clean it weekly with some antimicrobial spray).

Also, I've found that a thicker mat forces you to stabilize your core more than a thinner one, as there is more mat (which has some "give" to it and moves slightly) between your toes and the floor... which I'm sure has a bit of benefit to it!

I have had a cheaper mat for the past couple years. Actually I have two. One, stays at home and the other stays in the back of my for classes. They both still work great to me.

I have a standard mat from Gaim that I bought from Tarjay for 20 bucks. I made a deal with myself that if I practiced yoga at least twice a week for 3 months straight, I could upgrade to something fancy. I reach my mark and now I'm searching for a good thick mat for my wrists. Any suggestions?
