You're asking and I'm answering . . .
Dear FitSugar,
I know I'm supposed to stay hydrated and drink at least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day, but if I do, I end up peeing at least once every hour or more. Is this normal? How many times should I be going to the bathroom?

Yup, totally normal — I also go to the restroom a lot during the day. There is no real set number of times that you should be running to the loo, because it totally depends on your fluid intake. You drink water to replenish the water that gets lost through perspiration, excretion, and other bodily functions, and you don't necessarily need to be downing eight glasses of water each day. The amount depends on your lifestyle, whether you exercise a lot, or if you live in a warm climate. Check out Fit's Calculator to figure out how much water you should be drinking each day.
There's another way to find out if you're getting enough water. To find out what it is just read more.
You can also figure out if you're getting enough water by checking the color of your urine. It should be clear or close to it. If it is, then you're doing a great job of keeping yourself hydrated. If it's closer to neon yellow, then add a glass or two of water to your diet. If your pee is clear and you're running to the lady's room more often than you'd like (which it sounds like you are), then cut back on your water consumption by a cup or two.

What about #2 Fit?
1Good to know. Once in elementary school I read the average person only goes three times a day! I've been kind of freaked out since then (nearly 20 years, oh my).
2i love that calculator you linked to. very helpful!
3Uh, I think we need to really study our research here. It's now been proven that there is NO POINT in drinking 8 glasses of water, b/c the foods that we eat contain mostly water. So if you are trying to push 8 glasses and it's a struggle, then you really can back way down. Main point is staying hydrated, but if you have to guzzle to get your "recommended" 8, then taking off a few will not at all hurt you. After a certain amount, it gets pointess...which is when you are pissing out all of the water you are intaking b/c it's too much.
4I think I'd like to see that study, Berlin. My 8 glasses plus help me feel energized and less apt to snack during my workday... along with the benefits of shiny hair and clear skin... Plus, since I started drinking the 8 during the day, I don't feel like I have to carry water with me during my run because I've remained hydrated all day...
5Well Fit points out that you don't have to drink 8 cups a day. It depends on the person. I mean my dad drinks more then that but he also sweats a lot (he drums for like 6 hours a day) and does hot yoga. Like she says it depends on the person. That "recommended" 8 glasses I think is a good starting point, then listen to your body. Try it and see, might be too much or not enough. I pee a lot too, but I think I have a pretty small bladder because not a lot fits in there. But my pee doesn't look like water or anything. And I drink more than 8 cups a day.
6Plus it's good for your skin
I average about 8-10 cups a day adding in two cups of green tea. I go all day long but I'm clear. Yea!!!
7I'm always drinking water through the day and I go like every hour. i was never worried about it b/c that was normal for me, but it seems to freak other people out, lol. Now I can tell my bf I'm normal.
8Pee calculator. Hahaha.
9One note about the clear pee thing...I know it's true that your pee should be close to clear (and not super yellow), but that's only during times that your body isn't expelling vitamins! I take a multi-vitamin and my pee is dark DARK yellow for a few hours afterwards, but I drink water like crazy.
10Mondaymoos, there are many studies, and one most recently was with Dr. Oz who is frequently on Oprah. There is no scientific evidence that drinking 8 glasses of water has any additional benefits, and if you constantly have to run to the bathroom as the original poster, then you are stressing out your kidneys, which is bad:) But Dr. Oz took 2 twin females, young, fit, active lifestyles, and had one drink 8 glasses a day, the other didn't (I forget exactly what she drank, but it was just an average amount and eating normally while the other stressed to drink the 8 glasses) and with all of the tests run, they found absolutely NO DIFFERENCE between the two with reference to drinking additional water, and that's b/c you get the water from foods.
Again, too much water = stressing kidneys if you have to run to the Rest every hour!
11Hm. I'm not really sure how I feel about that study. Did he do the expirement several times or just once?
*shrug* I can personally say I feel healthier when I drink more water. To each their own, I guess.
12i don't know how much a drink, but it's way more than 8 glasses. it's most likely 15. and i really need it. at first i was freaked out, because it's a sign of diabetes... but my sugar levels are like baby's, the doctor was very surprised. it really depends on a person. and i wasn't like that before 2 years ago.
13I feel like I pee constantly too...I drink tons of water during the day and it seriously goes right through me.
14When I was hiking a lot in high elevations, I really had to push my fluids and drink lots of water. I started drinking more water on my off days too, because I found that I had more energy. I replaced my morning caffiene with water!
I do think there is a range though. If I don't have enough water, I feel sluggish. If I have just enough, I feel great. If I have too much, I can get headaches. I think people need to just be aware of their own habits and adjust to what their body is telling them.
15They only say you don't have to drink 8 glasses of water because most people eat enough foods with water in them to make up for it. And going to the bathroom all the time isn't that stressful on your kidneys. What IS stressful to your kidneys is not drinking enough, because it's more difficult for your nephrons to detoxify your blood. The more water, the better (to an extent; you don't want to drink too much too fast, or you can throw off your electrolyte balance). I drink a lot of water and other fluids throughout the day and I pee a LOT! As long as your urine is a normal color (light yellow to clear), you have nothing to worry about.
16good to know...
17I drink lots of water, so I pee at least once an hour. I call this Hamster Bladder Syndrome, since my bladder seems as tiny as a rodent's!
18i think somethignis wrong with me!! i pee 21 times a day, but i drink alot water. also, never ever try to cut down on water to stop goin to the bathroom! it is bad for you and could end up making you go more. becuz dehidration makes u go pee even more. what s wrong with me??helpi go pee too much!
19Well I go Pee Every 20 Mintues And I This Normal I usally go 8 times a day and Poop 3 times is this not Normal?
