You Asked: Fruit Serving Size?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

"I have read before that the 'medium apple' is no longer at all the average size of apples we'll find in the store . .. what's the REAL deal with that issue? What is the size of a medium apple? A medium banana? A medium peach? And then... what are the calorie differences per fruit? Does size really matter there too?"

Wow, you have a lot of good questions — I am going to do my best to answer them, so read more.
To start, here is what one serving of fruits and vegetables literally means:

  • 1/2 cup of fruit
  • 1 medium piece of fruit
  • 1/4 cup of dried fruit
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
  • 1 cup of leafy vegetables
  • 1/2 cup of cooked or raw vegetables

I know, I know. This still doesn't tell you what that looks like in terms of the foods, so this should help clarify:

  • 1 medium piece of fruit: the size of a tennis ball
  • 1 cup vegetables or fruit: the size of a baseball
  • 1 medium potato: the size of a computer mouse
  • 1/2 cup of grapes: one bunch the size of a light bulb
  • 1 cup of lettuce: 4 leaves

Obviously if you have a really huge apple and a really small apple, the calorie counts will be different but I generally tell people not to worry about the calorie counts in their fruits and vegetables (unless it's dried fruit or juice) because they pale in comparison to all the wonderful nutrients you'll be getting if you eat it. Also, I tend to have the theory that more is better when it comes to eating fruits and veggies, so if you think you may be lagging in your five a day it definitely doesn't hurt to eat some more.

i LOVE fruit, I usually don't worry too much bout the calories. I write everything I eat down, but I usually just assume it's medium sized unless it's obviously HUGE. Mmmm fruit for breakfast!

These are really helpful guidelines. It's so much easier to think of serving sizes in terms of everyday objects instead of cups and ounces!

Yeah, as far as where my calories are coming from, I'm not too worried about eating too much fruits and veggies. I need to eat more greens, but I eat tons of fruit. People need to worry about other things - cheese, refined grains and sugars - but I say it's almost impossible to eat too much fruits and veggies!

I happen to be Type 2 Diabetic and diabetics DO need to watch their fruit cunsumption. Certain fruits can drasticly raise your blood sugar. Grapes in particular will make your blood sugar go thru the roof so you have to eat them in moderation! also you need to mind how your fruits and veggies are prepared and what you are eating on them..raw and fresh or frozen are always best. drowning your salad in bacon bits and dressing will do more harm then good and having broccolli swimming in butter and cheese sauce defeats the purpose. These are perhaps a few things you could have mentioned in your response..they are obviouse but most of us don't think about it. Most people think that as long as they are eating a veggie it doesn't matter how it's prepared or what's on it!

Just wondering if anyone really knows what 5 Servings of Fruits and Vegetables means exactly.

Does it mean to eat 5 servings of fruit PLUS 5 servings of vegetables per day?

Does it mean that it could be only 5 servings of fruit and forget the vegetables? Or can you eat 5 servings of vegetables and forget the fruit?

Or does it mean to eat 2 1/2 servings of fruits and 2 1/2 servings of vegetables per day?

I am a vegetarian so I know I get my share but it just never sounded clear to me when they say eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables!!!

Yeah, well, the best thing to do to eliminate all the guessing and give your body it's daily fruit/veggie requirements plus added benefits is to drink only 4oz of Monavie a day. This stuff is amazing and proven time and time again to benefit a human being's well being.

oh, thanks for this! I sometimes drink V8 because it's the only option at work other than the vending machine when working late.

I used to keep track with dots on my desktop calendar (red for fruit; green for veg). I might go back to that--seeing it right there in front of me was an added incentive to go hunt down an apple. Smiling

If people would just eat all the fruits and veggies they need in a day, there'd be less room for all the junk!
    Squeeze out the junk!

I never watch my serving sizes of fruit or veggies because the amount of calories that I would eat by going over a serving size is pretty negligible. Consuming 2 servings of fruit may change the calories from 60 to 120, but consuming 2 servings of chips changes the calories from 150 to 300. I don't eat a TON of fruit every day, but I easily get 2 or 3 servings. And I know I get more than 5 servings of veggies a day. I eat so many fruits and veggies that I really don't have a lot of room for crap in my diet. I do try to avoid most dried fruit though, only because it's very calorie-dense and doesn't fill me up like fresh fruit.

Oh, and the current recommendation is now 7-9 servings of fruits AND vegetables daily...they say it should be 2-3 servings of fruit and 5-6 servings of veggies.

Good to know! I eat several servings of fruit a day...I think my serving sizes are larger than what's suggested too.
