I have a love/hate relationship with my cell phone. The convenience of being able to place a call from anywhere is great, but being on the receiving end makes escaping from my various duties almost impossible. I do like that I can catch up with a friend who is miles away while I take my dog for a walk, but I could never imagine talking on cell phone at the gym. Many gyms ban them, but some don’t.
Opening up a discussion on cellphone use in general is like opening up Pandora’s box, but I want to know if you use your cell phone at the gym? When do you think it's OK to use your cell phone at the gym? Have you ever complained to the management about someone on an endless call on the elliptical next to you? Are you able to block out other’s cellphone conversations by cranking your headphones? Speak up and share your feelings, both pros and cons, in the comments section below.

i could never have a serious workout and talk on the phone at the same time, all my energy is going into breathing properly!
1I cant even read a magazine while on a cardio machibne forget about talking on a cell...
2I don't talk on the cell phone at the gym, but I generally don't mind if other people do, as long as they keep it to themselves. But yesterday there was this dude two machines down from me who was talking REALLY LOUDLY into his phone the whole time. All of us were giving him a nasty look, but he was totally oblivious.
3I don't think I could have a serious phone call while at the gym/working out. It's funny though... when I used to work at the gym at my university, I would see girls on the elliptical & on the phone at the same time. How do they do that??
4I think it's ridiculous when using a cell at the gym, it's one thing if you keep it near b/c you're expecting an important call and you take it , but if you are using equipment while using? Please! Why even be at the gym in the first place b/c you aren't working hard enough if you can carry on a conversation. It is rude and inconsiderate, especially when you are taking up time b/c you are concentrating more on the phone then doing reps/sets while others are waiting for you to get up so they can use the machine!
**Didn't we already have this conversation not too long ago??
5What frustrates me is when there is a line of people waiting for cardio equipment, and someone is on the machine going ridiculously slow on the elliptical so that they can talk to their buddy on the phone. If the machine shuts off while you are using, then it's a sign that you aren't doing yourself any good anyway, and should get off and let someone else use it. I just think someone could get a better workout/conversation combo by walking at the mall.
6One upside to my former gym was that they had a NO CELLPHONE RULE. Once you entered the facility your cellphone was supposed to be turned off, moreover you could lose your membership if you broke the policy. And they were in the process of installing a cellphone signal damper so that even bring your cell into the gym would be pointless because you couldn't get a signal period.
I actually am building a portal cellphone signal damper with my youngest nephew. Basically it interrupts the signal and scrambles it so that no one with about 25 feet of you can use a cellphone. So far it's a little big and the range is only 15 feet but the kid has got an idea on how to make it smaller than its current 5"x7" size.
7My gym prohibits cell phone use in locker rooms because of camera technology.. which I think is dumb. The majority of people there are students- we're not perverts. My gym does not prohibit cell phone use while working out though. I don't see why it should be. It's annoying and one can't possibly get a complete workout when talking on their phone, but if we were to ban cell phone use, we'd also have to ban the obnoxious sorority girls who chatter endlessly while on side by side ellipticals. That just won't happen.

9My gym also bans cellphones in the lockeroom... The only place they allow them is in the lobby ad the wireless lounge...
Yet, because it's a high-end luxury gym, you have rich morons who feel they are above the rules and entitled to talk on their phone in the locker room and on the gym floor.
They also like to drink cups of hot coffee from Starbucks on the gym floor too, while lifting weights and walking on the treadmill. No lie.
10Ugh it pisses me off when people talk on the phone and work out. 1. It's not very safe. You can hurt yourself or others because you're distracted. and 2. Other people want to focus on their workouts, not your conversation.
But it happens quite a bit at the gym I go to since it is frequented by investment bankers and stockbrokers. The gym won't ban cell phones or they'd lose their business. In the meantime, I just crank up my headphones and watch TV.
11I used to bring my cell to the gym,but never have I talked on it. If I had a call,Id take it outside. I find it so rude when I hear someones phone ringing in the gym..on one of the machines! Obviously phones arent banned at my gym >:(
12Phones are not banned at my gym (University one) and I can't stand it when people talk on them while working out. Even if I have my ipod going you can generally still hear them and it's frustrating that they really aren't working out. So frustrating.
13I usually bring mine with me but I would never talk on it. Ocassionally I text, but that's usually when I am waiting for a machine or something.
14It is NEVEr ok to use your cell phone at the gym IMO. You can't really workout properly while chatting on the phone and it's annoying.
15It's impossible to truly workout and chat on your cell phone, when I see people doing this it's amusing. I don't agree with banning them since someone could have a family emergency. The people blabbing on them are only hurting themselves you know?
16Can't stand it. Are you there to seriously work out or not? It's rude and inconsiderate and can break the concentration of those who take their workouts seriously.
My gym doesn't have a ban, but it's a hardcore gym and if you talk on a cell phone, the dirty looks you'd get and the nice so not comments would send you out the door head held in shame never to repeat that same mistake again.
17i dont think it would bother me, but cell phones dont work in the gym i go to anyway. its kind of the same as two people on the machines next to eachother having a conversation, as long as theyre not yelling, which i guess people tend to do when theyre on their phones.
18Who cares? I don't talk on the phone at the gym, but why is it my problem if someone else does. The only time I think I'd have a right to complain about it is if there where tons of people waiting and someone was just going slow on the treadmill and not really working. Even then, though, they pay their membership fees too. It isn't my business that they don't get a good workout.
19I don't mind if they do as long as they are not being loud. And sometimes they are so loud that I am listening to music on my ipod and I can still hear them. But sometimes they look so stupid, especially the 16 yr old girl giggling on the phone, and you know it's not a business conference. haha
20My husband is deployed over seas. He calls maybe once every 2 weeks so I keep my phone by my side at all times. If he were to call, even if I were in the middle of my run at the gym I would pick it up. In any other case no I would not talk on my phone during a work out because I'm curtious and it would interfer with my concentration. To ban cel phones all together is I think a little extreme. I use my cel phone to listen to music during my work out and incase the daycare my son is at needs to get a hold of me for some awfull emergency I keep it with me.
21I don't like loud cell phone talkers - anywhere. This could be the gym, the coffee shop, etc. I do sometimes bring my blackberry on cardio equipment so I can check email here and there. Usually, it's too hard to do while working out. I keep the phone on silent and would never take a phone call without going to the lobby first.
22I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE ARE ON THEIR PHONES AT THE GYM.
I've gone to use a machine, and there has been a person using it while also talking on their phone, and in between sets they'll just sit at the machine and continue to chat on their phone... so their breaks in between sets ends up being LONG. It's very frustrating.
If you need to talk to someone for something important, take it to a corner and have the conversation and then continue your workout. Or if someone calls, answer, tell them you're at the gym and will call when you're done. Or just don't answer at all and call afterwards and say "sorry I missed your call, i was at the gym."
I leave my phone in my locker.
23i also hate it when people are on the phone and on the machine at the same time. i totally appreciate when someone takes a call to the corner or outside.
i hate when i have my music on and someone is yakking away next to me so loud that i have to keep turning my volume up. not safe for them or my ears.
24I hate it when people jabber incessantly on the machine beside me. I don't have a problem with cell phones in the gym, as long as you use common courtesy.
I admit...I bring my phone into the gym. However, I NEVER actually talk on it. I'm pretty attention deficit so I just text and surf the web. It's always on silent. It keeps me occupied!
The good thing is, I always have my ipod so I don't have to listen to other people talking = )
25My gym time is MY gym TIME. It is my time to escape. No way would I take my phone to workout and find it distracting when someone uses their phone next to me.
26i HATE when people use their phones at the gym. i find it incredibly rude. my feeling is, if you know you're in a place where people can't escape your conversation, DON'T USE YOUR PHONE.
thankfully, my current gym is beneath ground, so no signal. holler.
27I HATE HATE HATE WHEN PEOPLE ARE ON THEIR PHONES AT THE GYM, WHEN THEY ARE USING A PIECE OF CARDIO EQUIPMENT OF COURSE - BUT THEN AGAIN I JUST HATE WHEN PEOPLE ARE TALKING LOUDLY AT THE GYM IN GENERAL BECAUSE IT TOTALLY BREAKS MY ZONE I AM IN WHEN I AM ON MY OWN CARDIO MACHINE! JUST SHUT UP AND WORK OUT - THATS WHAT I ALWAYS SAY! IF YOU WANT TO SOCIALIZE, GO WALK OUTSIDE OR GO GET A DRINK!
28I HATE it when people are on the phone! Especially if they see me waiting to use the machine they are on and they are just taking their precious time walking at a speed of 1.5!!!!OMG! I take my phone but I have it on vibrate just in case an emergency came along. I could never have a proper workout while on the phone. Its distracting to me and for others as well.
29I was really shocked to see the problems that so many people are experiencing at their gyms with cell phones! At my campus rec center (I've been at two universities) and the other gyms that I've been a member with this has never ever been an issue. Everyone comes to workout and never once have I ever seen a person at any of those places on a cell phone. Period. The gym isn't the smartest place to practice multi-tasking. After reading this I'm going to consider myself very lucky and relish in the silence on my next visit to the gym
30at our gym, in theory, they aren't allowed to be used in the locker rooms or on the gym floor (don't know about classes because i don't take those). but people still use them and if you point it out to an employee they usually say something like "you are free to point out our policy to them". which bites. it's the same with the 30 minute use policy on cardio at peek times. the employees don't want to enforce the rules so what good are they? one day i started loudly chit chatting to the woman on the other side of me JUST to annoy the woman next to me that was on her phone. after 20 minutes i was tired of her.
31I guess this is the advantage of having a gym in the basement. I get no service & haven't seen anyone on a phone at my gym, so I assume they don't get service either...or maybe everyone at my gym is courteous.
32I can't stand it when people talk on the phone at the gym. Oddly enough, it seems to be limited to teenage girls. I find it distracting and really annoying.
Yesterday for the first time ever I took my phone to the gym with me since my daughter was with a new sitter for the first time. I put the ringer on silent and if the sitter actually called I would have gone outside, not bothered everyone else in the gym.
33Good gosh this is so annoying. Put that thing away, workout, when your done go to your car and use it. DO NOT USE IT IN THE LOCKER ROOM, I don't know if your taking naked pictures of people, come on. I have also noticed people screaming into their phones while working out, it's so annoying. Second, I have noticed girls on the "thigh machine" just keep going and chatting away for like 15 minutes, get off the phone, workout, get off the machine!!! Ugh. Sorry but I feel like some other folks, it's so annoying. And besides most gyms have cell phone policies but some people refuse to follow them, what is up with that, what makes you so damn special. Besides, I also see some folks just sitting on a machine, texting too. What is that about?
34I find it so weird to bring your cell phone to the gym. Its my time to focus and think, so I wouldn't want it. I find it really annoying to see people ambling along on a machine yakking away when there are other people waiting who actually want to exercise.
35i HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE when people are on their cellphones at the gym. even with my headphones on - i can still hear them talking and it's so distracting. if you're able to carry on a full conversation then you're not working out hard enough and at that point - WHAT'S THE REASON TO GO TO THE GYM IF YOU'RE GOING OT BE SOCIAL?
36i have an iphone, so since it's also my ipod i bring it to the gym. the only time i've answered it at the gym was when a friend who was meeting me there called, and i kept that convo short. i rarely if ever see people talking on the phone at the gym.
37ugh, so annoying. Some lady was on the stair machine at 6 am blabbing away loudly the other day.
WHO are you talking to for 45 min at 6 am????
38" Have you ever complained to the management about someone on an endless call on the elliptical next to you? " ????
39I think I live in another planet: I dont mind people doing whatever they want on they gym. Fit didnt you just give us advice on IGNORING everyone else at the gym? People please you all sound like you would sue someone for talking on the phone, I thought this was the land of the 'free'.
No cell phone at the gym for me...or others...PLEASE!!! Just the other day I forgot my Ipod and was forced to listen to a reporter (loudly) trying to get a story about steriods out of a coach...a little league coach at that! Not only was it annoying to have to listen to this guy talking as loud as he could over the machines, but add the piped-in music and his volume went up even more. Not my best workout
40Well my cellphone is my MP3 player so I need to use it. I dont talk on the phone while at the gym though. Ive a couple of ppl doing it, whatevers everyone is different.
41I hate it when people talk on the phone. They're usually louder and just annoying. Don't want to hear it. Also, don't have a conversation with someone on the machine on the OTHER side of me. Find two machines together or wait because again, I don't care.
42gabiushka, I totally agree. Like I said, I'm not a cell phone talker when I'm at the gym. But I think if I'm paying for my membership and I want to talk on the phone while I'm on the arc trainer, I have a right to do so until it infringes upon other people's workouts.
43I would never use my phone in the gym...im concentrating on getting my workout and i dont need any distractions. Our society just cant seem to be without our phones now...its scary. I think back to before cell phones....geez...how did we do it?...lol!!! Oh thats right...we had pagers!!
Same goes for driving and cell phone usage....its a no-no!
44Ugh, I never thought about people using camera phones in the locker room. That's gross! I personally don't have issues with this because my gym is in my house, but when I did go to the gym, I kept my phone with me just for emergencies. It did bother me when other people would talk on their phones, but I dealt with it by turning up my MP3 player. I figure, people are gonna be rude and probably won't listen to you, so you may as well just deal with it.
45I use my iPhone at the gym when I do cardio (which I usually do outside in the fresh air). So if someone calls I answer. That's only happened twice. Both times I am glad I took the brief call. One was a work situation, had I not of taken it, it would of slowed me up the next morning; another was my bf on his way home from work telling me what restaurant he was picking up food from and asked if I wanted some, and it was my favorite healthy food place, so of course I did! That made me love my iPhone even more!
46That isn't even right. I wouldn't even bring my cell phone into the gym. I guess if you were a parent you might want it with you but I'd put it on silent and if it rang I'd leave the room to answer it. It's rude to people who are there for a real workout when you're on a machine wasting time on the phone.
47I think it's so rude when ppl are having a conversation while on the elliptical. And, they usually are so into their talk they forget to pay attention to the time limit. Luckily our gym has somewhat of a phone policy. It basically states that we should have minimal phone usage.
48I've used my cell at the gym and I do it for the sole purpose that it's multi-tasking and I have no other time during the day to talk to people otherwise. I see other people talk on their cell and it doesn't bother me. It's actually BETTER than people physically at the gym and talking to each other! Those on the cell are usually quieter than two or more people working out together.
49I don't even bring my cell phone into the gym. The gym is ME time! I don't want anyone to contact me, I don't want to talk to anyone, I don't even want to see my cell phone. And I can't stand when there are people using machines and they are on the phone. It drives me bananas.
