Yogurt is so healthy for us. It's a great source of calcium, protein, vitamin D, and live cultures that help with digestion. It's also good for your mouth, has been shown to lower BMI, and can help with bad breath. Not only that, but yogurt contains tyrosine, an amino acid that converts into the feel-good chemicals dopamine and adrenalin, which clear your mind when you're stressed, and can give you an energy boost. Who knew yogurt could be this beneficial?

There are so many different brands and kinds of yogurt out there. Want to see how they all compare? Then read more

Here's the nutritional info for one 6 ounce cup of strawberry yogurt unless otherwise specified. It's interesting to see that some yogurts are healthier than others.

If you want really good yogurt, you have to make it yourself. The store stuff always has pectin or some other thickener in it.

I've really noticed how much I can taste the HFCS now. I used to always eat Yoplait growing up, and now it really tastes off to me.

I still sometimes buy Activa, but more often I am buying organic brands (Wallaby, Cascade Fresh), or checking ingredients to avoid the nasty stuff.

i used to HATE yogurt but once i got into eating it - it's become a good fail safe thing to eat. i think that i must have seen something on tv about the live cultures in yogurt or osmething that scared me away from it for years but once you get past all that and realize that in the US things are pasturized etc. ..you realize that it's not a bad thing.

it's great that you've included all these facts though Fit - THANK YOU!

One of the most important benefits of yogurt is calcium, since most adults don't drink three glasses of milk daily. You should have listed calcium in your breakdown.

I do Activia Light with my morning oatmeal. The fructose is still there, but lower on the list of ingredients in the less than 1% area, and I can deal with that.

From the website - Depending on the Activia Light flavor, the product has 8 to 9 grams of sugar per 4 oz. serving and 13 grams of total carbohydrates. Regular Activia contains 17 grams of sugar per 4 oz. serving and 19 grams of total carbohydrates. Additionally, regular Activia is a lowfat yogurt with 110 calories, and Activia Light is a nonfat yogurt with only 70 calories.

CULTURED GRADE A NON FAT MILK, PEACH, INULIN, WATER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 1% OF FRUCTOSE, CORN STARCH, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, KOSHER GELATIN, NATURAL FLAVOR, ANNATTO EXTRACT AND CARROT JUICE CONCENTRATE (FOR COLOR), SODIUM CITRATE, MALIC ACID, SUCRALOSE

The excessive sugar content of these yogurts is why I switched to plain, lowfat yogurt. Colombo Classic has 42 grams of sugar in an 8 oz. serving - that is outrageous! Sad

I usually just grab whatever yogurt looks good at the moment, but Stonyfield Farms Organic is my usual yogurt. It's the only store yogurt available here that is any kind of healthy.

I used to only eat Yoplait because I couln't find another brand with a decent consistency (most fat free varities are very watery), but now I'm addicted to Cascade Fresh. All natural, 110 calories, 7g protein, and it tastes amazing. I highly recommend the Apricot Mango flavor Smiling

I am completely obsessed with Stonyfield Farm's Oikos yogurts! The Greek style yogurt is so thick and creamy, it's almost impossible to believe that it's fat free...Plus, it doesn't have any HCFS, aspartame, or weird dyes and stuff to worry about. I like the vanilla, or I'll get the plain and add cinnamon, berries, honey, or ground flax. Mmmmm...

good to know. I make my own though...that's the only kind that I eat now, and I eat it every day. I was eating SO much yogurt, that it made financial sense to start making my own.

Cascade Fresh!!! Any and all, but my faves are Vanilla, Cherry Vanilla, Lemon, & Lime! YUM!

Seriously, if you've never tried it, buy some! The only place I see it is at Whole Foods though.

What's this hubbub about fructose? Fructose is the naturally occurring sugar in fruits, vegetables and honey. If you eat an apple, broccoli or honey you're eating fructose also called Levulose.

Now "fructose syrup" as listed on a food label IS NOT the same thing as High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFS or HFCS). Manufacturers must by law label ingredients as the known name of the ingredient. HFCS must be labeled as HFCS or High Fructose Syrup and it cannot be listed as simply "fructose syrup".

    From the Dannon website -
    "On the label…
Food product labels can tell you how much sugar is in a particular food, and also what types of sweeteners are added to the product.
    • For the total amount of carbohydrate and sugars, look at the Nutrition Facts panel.
    • For types of sweeteners added, look at the ingredient list.
Some of the common caloric sweeteners as ingredients:
brown sugar, invert sugar, corn sweetener, lactose, corn syrup, maltose, dextrose, malt syrup, evaporated cane juice, molasses,
fructose, fructose syrup, raw sugar, fruit juice concentrate, sucrose, glucose, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, syrup, honey."

I cannot imagine how any person eating a balanced diet can avoid eating foods that contain fructose (levulose). It's just not possible unless you only eat meat. If you add fruit to your plain yogurt you've add fructose. If you add honey you've add fructose and glucose.
