As if you needed another reason to get your Zs, a new study released this week reveals that poor sleep patterns are bad for your heart. More specifically, the researchers from the Duke University Medical Center found that poor sleep habits take a higher toll on women's cardiovascular health than men's.

The study followed 210 middle-age men and women who had no history of sleep problems, though 40 percent of them turned out to be bad sleepers who woke up often or had problems falling asleep. For the results of the study, read more.
The women with unhealthy sleep patterns also had worse "cardiac risk profiles." According to the article:
For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger. . . . "Women who reported taking a half an hour or more to fall asleep showed the worst risk profile," [researcher] Suarez said in a statement.
After learning that lack of deep sleep can increase your risk of breast cancer, does this news concern you? Does it keep you up at night? How long does it typically take you to fall asleep?

1I am so thankful that I was blessed with the ability to just lay down and doze off. My boyfriend has such a hard time sleeping, which he inherited from him mother. She sleeps for maybe 4 hours a night. If she's lucky. I don't know how she functions during the day.
2Scary.
3Not good...
4ashcwebb -- OMG Me too! I have been having terrible nightmares about my boss yelling at me.
5i have horrible sleep problems-i never did before a few months ago. it's weird, sometimes i am not even anxious about anything and i still can't sleep. i'm having one of those weeks right now and i'm so tired i just want to cry.....ugh and i won't take sleep meds cause i get addicted to stuff easily.
6Ironic that this article was posted. I have REALLY got to work on my sleep habits. I am so busy with school and work that when I get home, even though I'm exhausted, I goof around until I finally realize....it's past midnight already! Then I feel like an idiot because I was honestly tired at around 10pm and should have just gone to bed then.
This is definitely one of my goals to work towards...more sleep, better schedule.
7Yikes! I need to improve my sleep patterns. With school, I get about 4-5 hours a night and sometimes as I am about to sleep my heart is racing. It's a sign!
8Scary! And i take for ever to fall asleep!
9burningphoenix, I know what you mean! When I've been awake for too long I can feel my heart start pounding.
I have a terrible habit of staying awake until I'm no longer tired anymore and then I can't fall asleep. It's 3am and I plan on being up by 6
10I'd like to see a study about the sleep effects of having 15 - 30 lbs. of cats sleeping on top of you, and/or being woken up by cats in the middle of the night. Oh wait - I conduct that study on a nightly basis in my "sleep lab" aka bedroom.
11i don't think that i understand the relationship between sleep and breast cancer but i can understand the cardio aspect. it's hard - i don't usually get good sleep - i'm not sure why...and it's a bit upsetting at times. i know that i get cranky and irritable because of it.
12I have an issue where when I fall asleep I awake very abruptly with a hard, deep breath. Also with many instances of astral projection where I think I'm awake, roll over to fall back asleep then I actually wake up physically kinda disoriented because I thought I was already awake.
