Get in Gear: HoopGirl Hula Hoop

My doorbell rang the other day and when I answered it, my postman had left this package (pictured on left) leaning against my door. I laughed out loud and thought, "Hmm. I wonder what that could be. I was so excited that my hoop had arrived, since practicing my moves along with the HoopDance DVD using a dinky hoop I found at a toy store wasn't quite cutting it.

HoopGirl, the woman who made the DVD, says that using an adult-sized slightly weighted hoop makes regular hooping and doing tricks much easier. The small amount of weight keeps the hoop spinning longer, so it's better for working out (the more time you're actually hooping, the more you can tone your muscles and burn calories).

You can order high quality hoops on the website that range in price from $29.99 to $54.99. The less expensive hoops are for people who want a basic hoop. The pricier hoops have more tape on them, which adds more weight so these are better for working out. The most expensive hoop they sell can collapse down in case you want to travel with it.

Want to see what the hoops really look like? Then read more

When you check out the website, you can choose between three different color combinations. The bright colors make them look really cool when they're spinning.

I must say that my new hoop made hooping so much easier. With my first try, I was keeping it spinning around my waist for much longer than the kiddy hoop I had. Since it was easier, I kept with it longer, and was able to even figure out how to walk in a circle without dropping the hoop. If you're interested in taking up hooping, I definitely recommend treating yourself to a professional hoop. Now I'm curious, do you ever hula hoop?

I can't wait to have a place of my own, so I can make my own hula hoops. The one I have is slightly large, but what with being in college, I don't have the space to go make my own. I bought at a street fair, and I like to spend weekend nights hula hooping for the drunks.

http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html It's about 70 or 80 total, I believe to make your own, if you can get the tubing at your local Lowe's.

i love hooping! i took a 3-day workshop with hoopgirl about a year and a half ago--it was so much fun! now one of my favorite things to do is to grab a bunch of friends and hoop in the park on a sunny day. Smiling

I've tried the weighted hoops before and they are great! I had forgotten about how great they are until i read this post. I am totally going to buy one now...they are a totally great ab workout and like someone said, they stay up better than the light kiddie ones.

I am confused now!! I have a dinky hoop I bought at target, and it isn't the easiest thing to keep up, but I can do it (I did it for an hour yesterday). Is a weighted hoop a better workout in terms of burning more calories and toning muscles better, or is it just better because it makes you able to workout longer? Does anyone know? Smiling

I hoop everyday for about 2-3 hours, but then again, I'm a hoopdance teacher, so I'm paid to hoop!

To answer xrockette19x,(first of all, nice job for keeping the hoop up for an hour, that's awesome!) a weighted hoop like the ones from HoopGirl are much easier to keep up for a longer period of time and they do challenge your abs more, so you can get a much more effective workout. Also, if you want to start doing tricks, it's best to do it with a larger, adult sized hoop to be successful.

I too can hoop with a tiny original "Hula Hoop", but when I try to do more complicated moves, it's nearly impossible for a tall person like me (I'm 5'9")!

I absolutely loooooove my weighted hula hoop. My mom and I had one that we shared and we had to get another b/c we both wanted to use it all the time. It's great to do while watching tv at night or even reading! I highly suggest it, you see results sooo quickly (or at least I did)

i use a regular (its not that small, but it is a toy store) hoop, and i asked a physical therapist if it would be better to buy a weighted one. she said that is wasn't because more weight gives more momentum, meaning i'm doing less work. so isn't it better if you are struggling to keep it up because that means you are working those muscles?! if a weighted hoop really is better, is there anything i can add to my kid hoop to make it heavier? someone please reply to this asap!!!!
