When I started going to the gym the free weights were always free and the weight machines were always occupied. So in an effort to save time I had to only use the free weights and hardly ever had the opportunity to touch the machines. Now, I prefer free weights and don't care as much for the machines. So what about you?

I picked machines just because I hate having to wiggle through all the meat heads to get to the free weights, not to mention trying to find a space to work out that isn't already occupied!
I use the machines for now, because I'm working on my form. I want to eventually use the free weights.
free weights, because i do everything at home!
free weights, you can do so much more with them and they work so many more muscles than those silly machines.
i don't know what i am doing with free weights.
Doesn't really matter to me!
Free weights all the way. I like knowing I'm doing ALL the work.
free weights
Depends on what I'm doing. I like to use machines for like my legs, but I mostly use free weights for my upper body. But I do a mixture of both. That way I'm constantly using different muscles and doing new things!
Free weights.
Free weights for sure. You can do so much more with them and work many more areas all at once.
Free weights, now that I know a little more about how to use them well.
I agree...free weights all the way!

I love free weights, but I am sticking to the machines for at least another month or two to work on my form!
I like to use both. Free weight for my arms, machines for my legs.
I weight train at home so it is free wights for me. I do like that lat pull down machine though.
i use both, but i prefer machines.
I take a strength training class and we use free weights, so that's what I'm used to. I don't even know how to use the machines.
I use to be very intimidated by the free weights, now that I understand how to use them, I can't imagine my workout without them!
free weights so that I use all my other muscles to support my body. It just feels more 'real' with free weights.
They are both great...but honestly like the first person who answered...i really HATE having to go through all the "meatheads" to use the weights. They take up ALL the room in my gym AND they stare a bit too much. It makes me uncomfortable. The machines are always open and ready to go...with little adjustment. Sometimes the free-weights make me feel as if im not quite postioning myself just right. So i just take the easier route.
It gets the
job done either way!
I have to say that its amazing all the women on here who answered "free-weights"...because i swear at my gym i NEVER see a single woman using them. Maybe its just my gym....too many meatheads scaring the women away.
machines are a waste! don't use them. free weights give you a much better work out because you recruit more muscles to keep them stable while performing the exercises.
i prefer free weights for working my upper body, but i still use the machines for a few things (row, lat pulldown, chest press). i'm often the only female in the freeweight section, which is surprising because my gym is packed when i'm there in the evenings. the meatheads can be a bit annoying when they let weights crash to the ground on their last rep, but at least the 10 & 15 pound dumbbells are pretty much always available when i need them!
