It's that time of the year again. They're posted on nearly every street corner, and with more stands than there are Starbucks these sweet temptations are unavoidable. Yes, I'm talking about Girl Scout Cookie season.

I am not going to tell you to avoid them, since I've got a box of Thin Mints chilling in my freezer as we speak, but just be aware of the choices you make with this breakdown and practice moderation and self control. In case you didn't know, there are two bakers that make the cookies, ABC and Little Brownie, so I've added all variations from both bakers.
To see the full breakdown then read more.

Man, I used to devour whole boxes of these things. I can't believe how many calories I was shoving down my throat...
1I walked past the Girl Scout stand this weekend and those girls looked up at me with those puppy dog eyes, pleading for me to buy some cookies. I felt so bad because I had been a Girl Scout selling cookies outside of WalMart when I was little, but know that if I bought a box it would be gone before I even made it home. So I gave their troop a donation instead.
2Maybe I've been out of the country too long, but they've come up with loads of new flavours! I only recognise about half of those.
3samoassss i need a box right now..to eat...right now
4when I was a GS, we'd buy like 30 boxes and then eat them all! I'd eat a whole box in one sitting. No wonder I was a fat kid. Why the frell didn't someone stop me!
...I brought some thin mints into work today, lol
I liked the animal treasures, the shortbread with the chocolate on them? do they still have them and just renamed to something else?
5Oh my, first my friends are talking about Girl Scout cookies, now FitSugar! I have to go buy some! (In moderation and totally to support the Girl Scouts, of course.)
6Cookies sneak up on you because it's so hard to eat just the serving size.
7Love you for posting this info! So helpful. I'm a thin mint girl
8And samoas...ugghh THE BEST!
9Bad Cookies!
10I LOVE Samoas. I don't buy GS cookies, but if someone has them at work, I'll eat one. Good way to control my portion. When I was in high school I'd eat a whole row of Thin Mints without even thinking about it.
11i'm just not into them. that is a good thing though. but my favorites are the lemon ones. i know that is weird but i really like them and i am more of a chocolate person so this even suprises myself.
12great cookies, love thin mints... just read the ingredients tough hidrogenated oil is in the first three...maybe the girl scouts should start baking their own.
13I like the PB and chocolate ones but I rarely eat them.
14I haven't bought any this year, I haven't seen any girl scouts! Maybe that's a good thing. Personlly I think these are an awesome treat. I love samoas and thin mints and PB patties. Yum yum yum
15I don't like packaged cookies. They taste artificial to me.
Homemade cookies made from scratch (and with real butter, eggs, etc.) taste sooooo much yummier.
16I LOVE SAMOAS!!!
17actually, the breakdowns aren't as bad as i was anticipating. my parents always buy some from their neighbors' little girl, how can you resist a cute girl scout knocking on your door? and those cookies really are delish. makes me glad i don't live at home anymore, though! too much temptation!
18Never ever had one. Are they really that great?
19I love girl scout cookies, but I won't eat them anymore. If you look down the ingredient list, it has partially hydrogenated oils in there because they use shortening. It's just not worth it for me, especially since I usually eat half a dozen at a time... Like Keke84, I gave a donation instead.
20Love this time of year. Everything in moderation!
21If only I was capable of moderation...it's just best for me to avoid Girl Scout cookies all together. Although, I don't really see them around much. I guess Girl Scouts are a suburban thing, because the only solicitation I get is someone at work selling them for his or her daughter. It's easier to say "no" to a 40-something year old man with a box of cookies than a 10 year old girl.
22I love girl scout cookies and since I started using Spark People to lose weight I am learning not to eat too many. I was surprised, it was not as bad as I thought. I only eat 1 or 2 a day so I am not too worried.
23I love girl scout cookies and since I started using Spark People to lose weight I am learning not to eat too many. I was surprised, it was not as bad as I thought. I only eat 1 or 2 a day so I am not too worried.
24I've seen the girls out selling these since about Christmas time. I'm glad I cut sugar for a bit so I can't even think twice about caving and having some of these.
25I know that only some of the kinds of cookies are avaible in each region of the country. Some of the cookies are the same thing but go by a different name. and the cinna-spins are sold in 100 calories packs. But they claim to have no trans-fat but there is partially hydrogentated oil in them at least the ones from my area. The girl scouts should really teach their members better nutrition habits. Yes cookies are okay but trans fat is a no, no!
26I've had to turn down the poor little scouts for week; they're everywhere around here! I lust for the caramel coconut ones and had resisted them for years...until my boyfriend found out they were my favorite and brought me a bunch his mom had picked up
27I like the idea of donating money to them instead of buying the cookies; good call Keke!
you know, this post only makes me crave them more...
28Crack. That`s what`s in them. I swear.
29Ummm don't they put this info on the boxes anyways? And if for some reason they don't...they are COOKIES so you know they're not healthy. Eat a few boxes and if the "cookies" made you fat hit the gym
30You just have to wipe out the whole box in one sitting. It's the only way to eat GS cookies. Samoas rock.
31Just an FYI. As a Girl Scout Leader and the troop cookie mom I know a bit about the cookies. All the nutritional information is listed on each box including serving size. They are just like any other food you eat- you have to read the label. For the person looking for Animal Treasures- they are now called All Abouts or Thanks A Lots depending on which baker is supplying the area you live in. Same cookie, different shape.
32I do not know if every area does this but Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana all have what they call Cookie Share. That way if you would like, you can buy a box or more of cookies and the Girl Scouts will donate the cookies to the charity of their choice. Many in my area are sending cookies to the troops serving overseas, local food banks, homeless shelters, Ronald McDonald Houses. So even if you are strong enough to resist buying them and eating them you can still help the Girl Scouts and donate cookies to their chosen Cookie Share recipient. By the way Girl Scouts do teach the girls about nutrition and one of those lessons involves using moderation and reading labels to know what they are putting into their bodies. Just like everything else we eat, cookies can be a part of a healthy lifestyle as long as you do not over do it.
33girl scout cookies are made with palm oil which supports the devistation of rain forests, which is definately not worth it for me. just say no.
34Well as a GSCookie mom and sales manager of the largest troop in the county...I have to say that I have done pretty good at resisting especially when I have all the troops leftover cookies here at home with me(over 100 boxes) but believe me when I say that I think I am starting to crack here...They look better and better each day..LOL especially since we ran out of the 5 boxes that we ordered..HELP!!!
35We buy one box for each member of our family then when they're gone they're gone. They make a nice once a year treat and everyone is careful how fast their box is eaten so they can make them last longer. With the exeption of my mother-in-laws Christmas cookies it's about the only time there are cookies in the house. My kids will eat fruit just as well.
36It is all worth it though because the girl scouts get to take a fun trip durning the summer and get to go see Hanna Montana, stay all night at a motel, and play at a waterpark the next day with the money they raise...Got to say that it has also helped my daughter be more outspoken especially when she is selling at the WalMart...Usually can't get her to talk in public that much but she gets really excited about asking people to buy cookies...As for the healthy side of GSCookies...Do all things in moderation...LOL
37EAT WHOLE BOX. That is what it should say. That way, we can all feel like a champ if we don't. You can shovel anything, any time, but these epicurean rarities may be savored or devoured. It does all get back to self control. Samoas, Thin Mints, Do si does, ...Re; audkem01 comment 19 hohoho yes, They are. Buy one box of each, sample them, and there will be your Zen. A bit dramatic, yes. at any rate, a good deed will be done, and the leftovers will be appreciated by co-workers. If there are any! Caveat: these are real cookies, real sugar, fast energy. they can be burned quickly, and you are not BSing your body. Guilty pleasure or reward, this is just once a year. And it seems that Girl Scouts is one of the last untainted youth institutions we have. (don't make Lilith Fair a field trip,PLEASE!!)
38This isn't going to be happy, but I hope you'll allow it, in case others have had similar experiences. My daughter was a Brownie, until we started having weird problems with our local troop and council leaders. They were starting to have 'counseling sessions' on overnights and campouts, such as asking the girls to share death experiences, i.e., a grandparent or sibling or friend dying. This was done across all age ranges, and I thought it absolutely inappropriate. Then, the Planned Parenthood connection was exposed, and local team leaders didn't seem to have a problem teaching sex ed to our girls w/o parental knowledge, much less consent.
Because of these things (and I did bring them to the attention of the local group, in depth, and was disappointed by their response) I can't support the GS, and so the cookies are no longer a temptation.
I will admit, it is difficult to pass by a cardtable at a grocery store and see those little faces looking hopefully up at me. I don't feel I need to go into the whole shmear about why I can't support GS any longer, so I just smile and say "No, thank you!"
39People crack me up, the point of anything sweet is so that we can indulge ourselves and enjoy life just a little bit. Everyone deserves a treat every now and then, it's all about self control and eating things in moderation. And if you eat the whole box, walk a mile a day for a week, don't beat yourself up over it. Honestly, what's the difference in eating a box of cookies or going out to eat at your favorite restaurant and getting an appetizer, entree, and dessert plus maybe an alcoholic beverage? That would certainly be more calories then a box of cookies satisfying your sweet tooth...and let's face it, the cookies with a tall glass of milk are highly more enjoyable...my personal favorite are the tagalongs...
40Here's a great way to eat Thin Mints- freeze them and then use them to scoop out vanilla icecream. Certainly not low calorie but a great once in a while indulgence. BTW Prolifemamma, not all Girl Scout leaders or Girl Scouts volunteers are teaching sex ed or having those types of discussions with the girls. If you want to have more control over what goes on at a GS meeting, VOLUNTEER to be a leader or a registered adult. I did and it's been a great experience with my daughters. I've been a Girl Scout for more than 20 years including as a child and it has been a wonderful experience for me and my daughters.
41Well there you go, anything good must be exploited, or more American-ly, capitalized upon. Prolifemama, is see your point. But remember, don't tell people what choice to make. That is becoming an increasing threat. We had a choice, and we made the right one, just as all or nothing. I think all vehicles that guzzle gas should be done away with. You might not think the same way. These cookies are mot healthy by their nature. As are Most choices at restaurants. You are trying to raise your children in a way that you see fit. Planned parenthood used to be a private entity, but that is no longer the case. Perhaps this is happening within the Girl Scout organization as well. Let's hope we all look deeper and find the truth before all of our actions get manipulated.
42*sigh* Samoas are wonderful... i bought 4 boxes this year =) I keep the boxes in the freezer until I open it, then it goes to the fridge.
yum yum...
43How ironic is it that I just sit down w/ a nice box of Thin Mints (my fave, followed by samoas and tagalongs) and a nice tall glass of milk that i log onto yahoo, and they're talking about how unhealthy my thin mints are...
Truth is they're no worse than any other cookie on the market, and although I will no doubt eat an entire half-box in one sitting, thats my only guilty pleasure... You only live once, enjoy it... so you walk a few extra miles this week, whoop-de-doo...
44I would like to know the exact ingredient list for GS Cookies. I love them but, for various reasons, I no longer eat anything with corn syrup (high fructose, or otherwise) so that's a factor in deciding what to buy. The nutro information alone isn't enough...
45As someone who just deposited the last of the money from cookie sales.... all I have to say is..... I deserve the two boxes of Lemon Chalet Cremes and Lemonades EACH I ate yesterday. (all four in one day)
Yes, I live on the boundary of two councils, therefore, not only do I buy from my troop (and any other troop I run into at the stores - even if I still have 10 cases of cookies from my own troop in my car), but I still buy from my old troop / council 20 miles away. This way I support everyone! ! ! And with all the running around we Troop Leaders do, you know we are going to work off all that sugar.
But, thank goodness, cookie sales are only once a year, and the girls sold the VERY LAST BOX this year, so none to find in the freezer this summer. YEAH ! ! !
Now, does anyone have the sugar / calorie / fat counts for those Dreyers ice creams that have Girl Scout cookies in them.......
But in the long run, I have been doing this for 15 years, my daughter is now married and moved away, am helping my sister (who has no kids of her own) and will be doing it til I die. AM a lifetime member.
Also stood in the rain for many years selling popcorn with my son while he was in Boy Scouts (for 12 years). Any fat count on the popcorn.
It's all in moderation is my motto.
Hey, a girl could get fat on just SMORE's at camp... hee hee hee
Have a great day! And don't forget to support those Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts, and Camp Fire kids, and Cancer Society fundraisers (next month is Breast Cancer month), and especially right now the Muscular Dystrophy shamrocks for Jerry's kids!
46Interesting to know. I always sold the most Girl Scout cookies in my troop
I got mad
free T-shirts that way lol. I didn't(and still don't) even like cookies. But one of the low-fat ones was really good. I think it's the Cinna-spins but it was called something else. This was
like... 6 years ago at least.
47Out here in the Southwest we donate the price of a box of cookies so that the Girl Scouts can send cookies to our troops overseas. Everyone wins.
48In the Northern California Council the girls cannot return any unsold boxes. The troop winds up taking a loss on what they don't sell. That's why we are out there every weekend in March trying to sell those last few boxes. Also, if we don't participate in the Council sponsered fund-raisers, we cannot do any other fund-raisers for our troop. If you prefer not to buy the cookies, you can choose to donate them to the Gift of Caring program. Through this program you can choose to have boxes of cookies sent to local food banks, the Blue Star Moms or The Red Cross.
49Just like the other cookie moms that posted on here, the information is PRINTED on the box!
As for Prolifemama, I'm very sorry that you had that kind of experience with your troop. That must have been an isolated incidient. There is a section with older girls that covers some things, but nothing like what you mentioned or claimed to have happened. I hope that you reported your findings to someone higher up. That is something that needs to be taken care of.
