When it comes to working out, some of us dress up and some of us dress down, but the remaining question would be what do you wear to the gym underneath your favorite workout wear? The great underwear and workout debate has filled many a locker room with chatter, with both the pro and con factions claiming comfort is the reason they go commando or wear undies. I am sure that this debate informed the advent of those high-tech wicking panties designed to keep your nether regions cool and dry while rocking your heart rate into your target zone.
So I was wondering . . .

I do...I always do!
1Always!
In the locker room I notice some woman working out in thongs...ummm it looks uncomfortable.
2I never thought not to:)
3I always wear underwear and never quite understood why some women don't...
4It doesn't bother me so...
5I've totally been in a yoga class and noticed some girl's thong poking out the top of her pants. Yikes! I'm not a fan of thongs anyway - but when doing yoga?! Doesn't sound pleasant.
6i wear a thong under my lulu pants. it doesn't feel uncomfortable to me at all. that being said, i can't work out in regular underwear because it bunches up. i have a couple tiny little lululemon thongs that i keep with my workout clothes.
7i cant imagine not wearing underwear when working out...that said i have worn a thong to pilates and it wasnt bad.
8Um, I wear thongs every day and of course I wear them while I workout. Why would you want sweaty, panty butt?? Gross!
9I would never wear a thong to work out, im not going there to show off, im going there to work out.
10I didnt even know people worked out comando. that just seems weird to me.
i wear thongs every day and under my workout wear. i couldn't imagine not wearing underwear!
11I have to fourth the thong...
12hate the panty lines and I would feel weird going without.
I wear underwear unless I'm cycling. Underwear + cycling + bike shorts = chaffing!
13how disgusting to go WORKOUT as commando! I wear itty bitty GStrings & Thongs ALL the time, so of course they are my workout choice...never have had a problem with them 'getting in the way'
14I'd feel odd without undies...
15I'll admit to go commando... It's just more comfortable under tight workout pants
16I never wear undies when I workout. I find it really uncomfortable and I usually don't check out what other women are doing in the locker room.
17i totally rock the undies when i run, and thongs at yoga. but i second the bike comment, that is where i have to go commando. you just can't wear anything under bike shorts, its asking for trouble.
18Well...some people sweat more in places than others. I know, TMI, but I prefer to wear a nice, fitted pair of cotton undies when I work out as it helps with the sweating situation. I have done my run in a thong though with no problems.
19I've never heard of this debate! haha! But I do only wear thongs when working out. Agreed with the posters above-- sweaty panty butt = gross!
20I only go commando when playing tennis. The tennis skirts that I own have built in underwear/shorts and I feel like wearing underwear with them is just one more thing that isn't necessary...
21and on another note, the women who are so afraid/disgusted by thongs - have you seriously never tried it and just don't know how awesome they are, or is the disgust based on actual experience?
22I ALWAYS wear underwear, especially when I go to the gym. I have a treadmill and a small "home gym" in my house, and sometimes I go bra-less when I exercise at home. I'm a 34 A, so it's no hinderance. Hahaha, does anyone work out without a bra?
23My early experiences with exercising was running outside, and I always wore running shorts with the lining that are made to be worn without undies. Once I started doing other things, I just kept not wearing them because its comfortable and didn't feel like having to waste a pair of clean underwear for an hour of working out. Of course, I wear a different pair of bottoms every time I go to work out.
24well when i DO workout, although it's been not happenign these days, i definitely always do
25I go "commando" at the gym, just because I got tired of having to bring an extra pair with so I would have some non-sweaty ones to change into. I guess everyone one sweats differently, but when I do wear underwear during a good workout the end up totally soaked and feel all clammy and gross afterwards.
26I never thought to wear undies! I wear the shorts w/ the built in lining and most of my tights have a crotch lining, so it never ocurred to me to wear underwear! Doesn't wearing underwear chafe the man in the boat?
27I never even realized there was a big split on this issue. But that said, I agree with syako, I don't get the issues that people have with thongs. They're comfortable.
28I wear full ass covering underwear when I work out. I don't understand the thong thing and the aversion to "sweaty panty butt". I don't get sweaty panty butt, but maybe if I had material UP MY BUTT I would.
29That reminds me of this one guy that didn't wear underwear at my gym. He was arrested shortly after he quietly made this known to everyone else in the gym.
30This sounds weird, but if I wasn't in college, I think I'd probably go commando. The only reason I don't is because I sometimes workout in shorts twice before washing (ew gross maybe, but I don't sweat a ton) and if I went commando, like underwear, I'd feel compelled to wash my shorts after every wear. Going commando would be nice though, because I HATE worrying about my pantyline showing (especially when there's a row of people on the ellipticals behind me that could stare at my butt for my entire workout if they so pleased!).
31Im not a fan on the thong, g string maybe if its REALLY needed. Thats why I couldnt wear one working out - with kickboxing, african dance class - yoga -....it just wouldnt work for me.
I wear cotton undies that fit, so no bunching and its super comfy to me.
Oh and if you have a gym like mine, you will have choice but to notice the other women. For Example yesterday this woman's bare @ss was inches away from my face! (_|_) not cool.
32I wear what I grab. If I happen to have underwear on at that time, cool. If not, whatever. I prefer shorts with lining to anything else.
33I go commando most of the time, whenever possible or convenient, not with skirts or dresses of course.
Which is odd considering I own at least 50+ thongs...
Go figure.
34I guess I could add that I never change at the gym tho. I change before hand.
35I bought some of those Patagonia moisture wicking panties!
I must wear panties. Come on, I think it's bad hygiene not to!
36cotton thongs, always! they're actually quite comfortable. i never notice them, and there's the wonderful absence of bunchy panty lines, too.
37When I danced I never wore undies, but for any other activity panties all the way.
38I wouldnt exactly call it commando...my workout pants have a crotch panel in them and they are tight so that if i wore underwear they would show. YUCK!! There is nothing worse than panty lines and the awful rubbing(and sometimes pinching!!) than comes with trying to run wearing thong underwear. Sorry to gross you all out...but pfffft!
39I don't understand how it is bad hygiene not to wear panties. Please explain. I change my workout bottoms everytime I work out so it is like changing my panties.
40What I don't get is the concern that - GASP! - someone might know you wear underwear, thus the thong or commando. I say to each her own (I don't prefer it, but I'm not against it), but come on people! Why are you sooooo concerned that the person on the machine behind you knows you wear underwear? It's a fairly common article of clothing...
41I always always do,..Not wearing it feels like not brushing my teeth (too mee).I always wear a thong, the victoria's secret Body are very comfy..it feels like you are not wearing anything.
42some are saying that it would be DISGUSTING not to wear underwear but instead wear tiny thongs! i wonder how much of a difference a small piece of fabric makes.
43EWWWWWWWWW Are you serious?
44My undies have NEVER gotten in the way! All kinds!
Plus, I guess I like to think of it as a second barrier for when I'm on the bike! Haha... (ok so I really hadn't thought of that until just now)
45Um, EW...I can't imagine not wearing undies, ever. Mine never really bunch up or anything, but I just feel so naked without undies on. Of course, I take them off right after I work out so I don't get a yeast infection or anything.
46Couldn't imagine going commando while working out. Moisture is not my friend.
I did however switch from hip-huggers to a low-rise thong for vanity sake (horrible panty lines under my yoga pants) and to stop the bunching.
47Panties all the time
48No panties. Count me in as nasty. What's the crotch liner for if you're supposed to wear panties? I work out, I wash 'em. And I will never wear butt floss. That's just as nasty to me. Sorry...
49Weird, I didn't even realize that people DIDN'T wear underwear to the gym. I always, always do.
And I totally agree with kiddylyd regarding wearing thongs to avoid panty lines at the gym -- I'd never want them in daily life, but who cares at the gym? Sorry, I'm not there to impress anyone, pick anyone up, or be fashionable -- I'm there to get a workout, and if you're offended by my VPL while I'm on the elliptical, I really don't care. I separate my daily style from my gym style, where I just wear what's comfortable...
