Always on the lookout for a new cup of tea to enjoy, I have recently taken to drinking a cup of rooibos, pronounced Roy-boss, after dinner. Also known as red tea or bush tea, rooibos hails from South Africa and is not really a "tea," but an herbal tisane. High in antioxidants this tisane is a great dessert substitute. It is caffeine free so it won't keep you up past your bedtime, and it is naturally sweet so you don't have to add extra calories in the form of some sweetener like sugar or honey.
The number of health claims is a little overwhelming. It is said to:
- Ease irritability, headaches, nervous tension and insomnia.
- Act as an anti-spasmodic agent, to relieve stomach cramps and colic in infants.
- Can be used to treat hay fever, asthma and eczema.
- Slow the aging process when placed directly on the skin.
- Boost the immune system.
Unfortunately, the scientific studies of rooibos are limited and the few studies completed do not support the myriad of health claims. Rooibos is, however, high in many essential minerals, like: copper, iron, potassium, calcium, fluoride, zinc, and magnesium. It is also high in alpha-hydroxy, which is why it works on the skin topically.
I drink it for the taste and if it boosts my immune system that would be a great bonus. Numi Mellow Red Rooibos is my favorite because it is organic and fair trade. Do you like rooibos? Tell me in the comments section below.

i live next to south africa so this is all there is around!
1its really tasty and good for you indeed.
The first time I had rooibos was in England in 2004. A girl staying at the same B&B had just returned from a trip to Africa with some "vanilla red" tea. I fell in love! When I returned to the US I thought that I would never find anything like that here. Then I found a Celestial seasonings tea called Madagascar Vanilla Red. I bought it not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. It tastes just like the tea I had from Africa! I have a cup almost every day.
2The Republic of Tea has a rooibos tea in a really cute cannister called "Get Gorgeous" promoting good skin. It's delicious.
3I just finished my box of Madagascar Vanilla Red and I'm jonesin for more. I also love it as iced tea.
4When I was in Amsterdam a few years ago, I got a horribly upset stomach. My friend, who's from there, made me some of this tea, and I felt better almost instantly. It's not my favorite, flavor-wise, but it's a very soothing, effective holistic choice!
5mmm rooibos is so yummy. if you want to try another awesome natural tea flavor - try Yogi brand Gojiberry tea..it has 50 grams of caffeine in each bag, so if you are looking for a more natural pick-me-up than coffee, this is the way to go. you won't believe how sweet it is!!
6I've never tried this, but I LOVE tea so maybe I'll check it out!
7I love rooibos! I bought some for the first time at a loose tea shop last fall and it's my new favorite for an afternoon cup! It's such a lovely color, too, that gorgeous red with the little purple bits thrown in.
8I have the Republic of Tea one and I have to say that I don't really care for the taste.
9Rooibos tea is the best tea to have cold! I don't drink it much as a hot tea, but for cold tea it's perfect.
And I am in love with the vanilla red tea from CS too ladies.
10I am always trying new teas!! Yogi Tea makes a delicious Rooibos Tea -- Chai Redbush (redbush is Rooibos) and it's organic!
11Numi is sooooo good! They also make a GREEN ROOIBOS blend with honeybush tea called Sweet African Red, as well as offering a straight honeybush.
12If you are a tea drinker, check out Numi!
i just found Numi's website, where you can buy there tea, its www.numitea.com
13I love rooibos tea! It's my absolute favorite! I drink two cups a day!
14Never tried rooiboos before. Sounds delightful. Gonna try it.
15I'm a big tea drinker...I have to try this!
16Never heard! Sounds yum. Now I just need to find out where to buy it...
17Hmm, maybe I'll have to sub this in for my usual green tea occasionally.
18never tried but i like tea. maybe i should try!
19i love rooiboos! the classic rooiboos from adagio.com is my favorite. who knew it can slow the aging process when applied directly to the skin? guess i have a use for my used tea leaves now.
20I usually drink green tea, but I'm always looking for variety and I love pretty much all tea, so I will have to give this a try because it sounds really yummy.
21I love rooibos! Green rooibos is good, too. SBS Teas has some great rooisos.
22I come from South African and we practilly live on the stuff here. A lot of the people here only drink it when they're sick though. Another good tea to try is honey bush tea which is also rich in antioxidants and is even sweeter than rooibos. it's awesome, i couldn't live without it
23I drink rooibos. The Numi one is one of the best, too, but we don't get that stuff here, so I go for other brands.
24The last time I got sick my friend insisted that I get some rooibos tea. She swears by it. I can't report on its affects because I kept forgetting to buy it but this reminds me to buy some for my regular tea supply.
25mmm. i love roobois! so good for right before bed as it doesn't keep me up.
26If you have Peet's Coffee in your neighborhood, they sell this tea by the cup along with bags and loose. Great way to try it!

I'm not an herbal tea fan however I truly enjoy this tea! It stand up to having a splash of milk in it also.
27When my stomach is ticked off (which is it quite a bit, sometimes), this is the tea (rooibos) to drink! It is very, very bland to the stomach. I'm a tea junkie, but sometimes the tannins in regular tea (i.e., white, green, black) just nail my stomach and it's too much acid. Redbush doesn't have a bitter taste to it, either, like Hibiscus (which can be the downfall of hibiscus for many people trying herbal tea). Don't get me wrong, I love all kinds of tea, and Red Zinger is one of them (which is hibiscus based). But, yeah, Redbush is great. If you have a neighborhood Teavnana, try their loose redbush blends--out of this world! V
28i'm south african and i've been drinking this since i was a tot. i only recently started drinking ordinary (ceylon) tea, but i still prefer rooibos. i have it with soy milk, or black with honey.
29Thank you for the tip, I ve tried it and love the Rooibos. You should try this brand as well, it s the best Rooibos tea i ve tried so far:
