I recently bought some grapeseed oil for a new "longevity" recipe I am about to try (if it is any good I will be sure to share it with you). Unpacking my groceries, I was feeling like I got suckered into buying yet another cooking oil that is supposed to help me age gracefully. So I did some research and it looks like I am not such a sucker after all.
Made from the seeds of grapes left over from the wine-making process, one tablespoon contains only one gram of saturated fat to olive oil's two grams. It is also high in polyunsaturated fats, which have been found to lower the bad cholesterol. The brag sheet doesn't stop there. Grapeseed oil has been found to raise HDL cholesterol (that's the good kind), which is rare for polyunsaturated fats. Grapeseed oil is very high in vitamin E and other antioxidants, similar to ones found in grapes and wine. Not only that, it is high in linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acids).
To how this healthy oil cooks up, just read more.
Cooking wise, grapeseed oil has a higher smoke point than olive oil making it ideal for sautés; smoke point is where an oil burn starts to breakdown. It's also a very mild nutty taste so the flavor of the food you are cooking really shines. Grapeseed oil also has great emulsifiying properties (keeping everything mixed together) making it an excellent oil for salad dressings.
It can be difficult to find expeller-pressed (meaning harsh solvents and chemicals are not used to extract the oil from the seed) grapeseed oil, and that is why I like the brand La Tourangelle because it's is expeller-pressed. You can find it online at La Tourangelle or find a store in your area that carries it.
Happy cooking!

Fit, you are not the only one, I also just jumped on the band wagon of grapeseed oil!
I will have to check to make sure it is expellar press but so far, I love it for salad dressings and also have used it in my stir-frys. It is perfect if you don't want super
olive oily flavors in your salads!
1I've seen it at the store and I almost bought it because I liked the packaging, heh. Now I have an actual reason to buy some!
2my amazingly delicious vegenase has grapeseed!
3ooh, i love grapeseed oil! i think i just liked the packaging of mine at first, but now i use it all the time! glad to know there's some point to that.
4i jumped on the bandwagon last year. My friend's husband is a chef and said it is better than olive oil for sauteing.
5I'd just take it as a supplement.
6What a great idea Fit!! I'm going to look into purchasing this as soon as I can find a place that carries it! Any other brand suggestions for grapeseed oil?
7What a coincidence! I just went to get lunch and the cafeteria chef was just talking about Grapeseed Oil. I didn't know much about it - NOW I DO!
8thanks!
I might have to try it...I've actually never shopped for it before, but if it has a milder flavor than olive oil, it would be perfect for sauteeing.
9I almost picked that up at Costco the other day, but went with their hazelnut, walnut and sesame oils (the three pack was on sale). But all four were totally yummy! The only one I didn't like was the almond.
10Oooh I really will have to find some of this now...
11Okay...am really mad now. Have found some at my local stores, a couple of brands actually. None of them say they are expeller pressed and I would prefer not to have to order oil online...typical.
12I love grapeseed oil! I used olive oil for cooking for many years because I know it's healthier for you but once I tried the grapeseed oils I officially "crossed over!" I will not go back. LOL! I love the lighter taste & it doesn't burn as quickly. Check out http://www.garlicgrapeseedoil.com for a variety of infused flavored grapeseed oils! Once you've tried it you're hooked!
