We all have those times when we just want to pop something in the oven, or microwave and have it come out ready, healthy, and tasty. A simple goal for the girl standing in the freezer aisle at the grocery store pondering hundreds of frozen foods, right? Wrong. Often times we get these healthy frozen meals home and heated up only to find they lack one key ingredient: taste. Lucky for us the good folks over at Epicurious have done the dirty work and evaluated healthy frozen meals to find the best of the best.
Here's their take:
The Winner: It's not just for cereal. . . Kashi, a newcomer to the frozen-dinner scene, was our favorite of the bunch. We really liked its Lemongrass Coconut Chicken, a colorful, well-balanced meal that combines a chewy, nutty whole-grain pilaf, chunks of chicken, carrots, and sugar snap peas with a sauce that had a lemongrass kick. Though Kashi's frozen dinners aren't marketed as diet meals, this one comes in a fairly large portion (10 ounces) for only 300 calories, which is comparable to a similarly sized diet meal, plus it has fiber (7 grams) to fill you up. We also liked Kashi's Chicken Pasta Pomodoro, which has toothsome multigrain pasta, veggies, and a well-spiced, not overly sweet tomato sauce.
There's more so read more.
Runners-Up: If you're looking for the comfort of pasta with an Alfredo-style sauce, we recommend Lean Cuisine's Chicken Fettuccini Dinnertime Selects, a fairly big portion of pasta with a creamy sauce and fresh-tasting broccoli, along with a side dish of caramel apples for dessert (12 ounces, 360 calories). Also good was the cumbersomely named Weight Watchers Smart Ones Bistro Selections Chicken Fettucini [sic], which had the cheesiest-tasting sauce but no veggies (10 ounces, 340 calories).
I always loved Kashi myself, so I'm glad I'm not the only one supporting such a great brand. If you have a healthy frozen meal that you're particularly fond of, share it with us in the comments section below.

I love amy's teryaki bowl...290 (i believe) calories and delicious!
1The kashi chicken Pomodoro lacks serious flavor. No thanks.
2obsessed with amy's vegan black bean and veggie burritos. They are SOOOOO good!! Also love amy's shepard pie.
3I tried the Kashi chicken pomodoro as well, last time it was on sale and agree with syako. It wasn't the worst frozen meal I've had, but I'm a bigger fan of lean cuisine. Plus they're on sale more often. Kashi dinners are crazy expensive usually.
4urrgh! I wish we had these in Canada!!
5I prefer Kashi's Black Bean Mango rice meal, or the Lime Cilantro Shrimp, which definitely do not lack flavor....anyoen else tried these?
They were actually on sale 4 for $10 (usually bimonthly) at my grocery store
6LauraHealy, you can get the Amy's kitchen frozen meals in Canada.
7Anything Amy's they are so good and I never have to look to see what meat is in them since they are veggie only.
8As big of a "Kashi" fan as I am, I like Lean Cuisine for frozen meals. If I eat them they are "lunch" it's not enough for my dinner
9Oh and I eat a lot of Commensal brand frozen dinners... maybe that's just a canadian thing though

all vegetarian.. and so damn good... Mmmmmm
I had that lemongrass chicken the other day for lunch and it was really good. I was slightly disapointed with the veggie content though. I don't think I found one sugar snap pea. Taste was good though and I did feel full.
11What's the price on these? $5/entree?
12I love love love Helen's kitchen tofu curry... I'm a veg but not the biggest fan of tofu usually, but this is soooo good! Only about 300 cals with about 14 g. protein and decent fiber content, too!
13I tried a couple of the Kashi meals, and I really disliked them. No flavor at all. In the freezer section, I usually stick with Amy's!
14i'm a fan of weight watchers and lean cuisine italian meals. ravioli, mac and cheese, and lasagna are all pretty good. they may not be as healthy as some of the other options (namely kashi) but it's the only way i get italian food anymore, and they're usually only five or six points so i'll take the hit on the sodium lol. i'd like to try some of the other frozen meal options but i hate hate HATE rice so that severely limits my choices haha.
15i just tried the lime cilantro shrimp. it was a bit too "watery", but again, not the worst i've ever had. i grabbed one at target to try out the brand, certainly not going to become a constant in my lunch rotation.
really trying to bring more homemade stuff & have moved away from the frozen meals. i'd rather do sandwiches/wraps with whole grain bread, some protein & veggies, IMO. just takes a bit more planning & dedication.
16i love's amy's stuff - so good
17I must be honest, I often sacrifice taste and buy whatever is on sale, but Id love to try some Kashi meals. Never heard of Amy's, Im gonna have to thoroughly look through the grocery freezer next time.
18I love lean cuisine's roasted vegetable pizza, its soo good
19weight watchers santa fe beans & rice is the BEST!
20Not really a fan of frozen food, would much rather prepare food myself. But on those days where I really can't be bothered, and there is a sale at the grocery store, I usually get Lean Cuisine. Their chicken alfredo isn't too bad and its quite filling. I add on some broccoli or a small salad for veggies.
21I love anything by Kashi...my husband and I are pretty obsessed. We get so excited everytime we see a new food item by Kashi that we haven't tried! I think their frozen meals are pretty good.
22I'm with syako on this one: that particular Kashi meal is zerooooo on the taste scale. Their bean-based meal is a little better, and I will go for that when I need something frozen.
23I like the Kashi meals but they're expensive, even at Target they're still over $3. I saw them at Costco, six for $9. That's not bad! I'll have to make a trip there eventually...
I still love Amy's bean and rice burritos, and they're only $1.47 at Target!!
24i love lean cuisine!! hvnt ever tried Kashi...
25Kashi may be healthier, but for the average person it's too expensive to buy!
