The well-known old advertising slogan "Guinness is Good For You" may be true after all.
According to researchers, a pint of the black stuff a day may work as well as aspirin to prevent heart clots which raise the risk of heart attacks.
Drinking lager doesn't yield the same benefits as a stout. A team of experts from Wisconsin University actually tested the health benefits of Guinness on dogs with narrowed arteries, similar to those found in human heart disease. They found that the dogs given Guinness (as compared to lager) had reduced clotting in their blood. Clotting is bad for hearts since a heart attack is triggered when a clot blocks an artery that supplies blood to the heart.
Guinness also contains heart-helping antioxidant compounds, similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables, that slow down the deposit of harmful cholesterol on the artery walls.
Guinness however, makes no medical claims for their beer. The slogan was actually born from customers claiming that they felt good after their pint.
Many patients are prescribed low-dose aspirin to help with blood clots. Could a pint of Guinness a day be prescribed instead? Something tells me, "Uh, NOT on your life." Oh well. It was worth a shot.

I feel Great after a guiness (or 10)
1Guiness is often given to people (who like beer) coming off of an addiction to alcohol for lots of reasons. It is used in weaing because of the vitamins and minerals in it AND it is lower in alcohol percentages so it will help the body from going into shock from alcohol deprivation, but isn't enough (in controlled doses) to harm someone.
It used to be PRESCRIBED to women in Ireland when they were pregnant (and this wasn't long ago) because of the above mentionned reasons. They found that it was too hard for women who were used to drinking LOTS to go cold turkey during pregnancy (not hard as in they couldn't quit, but hard on the body because it was too much of a shock). So they had it prescribed for a once-a-day drink to keep their bodies running well.
My Goodness, My Guiness.
I don't mind it...my husband LOVES it!
2This is my husband's favorite! There's always some in the fridge...at least it's good for him!
3I also read somewhere that it's okay for pregnant women to drink Guiness (within reason, obviously), because of the high iron content. Is this true?
4I tried Guinness on draft to see what all the hype was about, and I dont like it all. Either the bartender put too much foam, or its just not for me. It got too warm by the time I got to half. I'll stick to Bacardi.
5mmmm...Guiness. Nothing like a good guiness for breakfast.
6Guiness and steak pie...mmmmmm!! I have that about once a year at this pub in London that we like to go to.
I made my husband's and his friends a guiness and beef stew once...they LOVED it!!
7OMG I forgot to mention, I had Guiness-flavoured ice cream in Brainerd, Minnesota. I ordered it because it sounded so awful and bizarre that I HAD to try it...turns out, it is awesome and after sampling MINE, everyone at the table had some!
The waiter suggested it to me (he was hilarious) and said "you have an accent, you must be up for some interesting things...try this!"
8I was so excited by this post, I just had to change my picture
