Hip flexors refers to the 4 muscles that raise the leg in front of the body. They are the psoas, the rectus femoris (part of quads), the sartorius, and the tensor fasciae latae. 
These muscles get tight from sitting, running, driving and biking.

I've pulled my hip flexors 4 times at gymnastics...mostly because I have long legs and it keeps alot to pull them up on bars
