When it comes to exercises, not all are created equal. While we all may have our favorites, some are better known to be more effective at getting the job done than others. WebMD has created a list of their top seven (odd number, eh?) most effective exercises and here are highlights:
- Walking. Any exercise program should include cardiovascular exercise, which strengthens the heart and burns calories. And walking is something you can do anywhere, anytime, with no equipment other than a good pair of shoes.
- Interval training. Whether you're a beginner or an exercise veteran, a walker or an aerobic dancer, adding interval training to your cardiovascular workout will boost your fitness level and help you lose weight.
- Squats. Strength training is essential, the experts say. And our experts tended to favor strength-training exercises that target multiple muscle groups. Squats, which work the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteals, are an excellent example.
There are more effective exercises so read more.
- Lunges. Like squats, lunges work all the major muscles of the lower body: gluteals, quadriceps, and hamstrings. Lunges are a bit more advanced than squats helping to improve your balance as well.
- Push-ups. If done correctly, the push-up can strengthen the chest, shoulders, triceps, and even the core trunk muscles, all at one time.
- Abdominal Crunches. Who doesn't want firm, flat abs? Experts say that when done correctly, the familiar crunch (along with its variations) is a good choice to target them.
- Bent-over Row. Talk about bang for the buck: This exercise works all the major muscles of the upper back, as well as the biceps.
So which do you do? I do all seven — w00t, w00t!

I do all seven, but not in the same workout every time.
1Sweet
I do push ups and crunches pretty much everyday
2I do 'em all!
3Everytime I go to the bathroom at work, I do 10 squats. It's a good way to get some blood flowing, and its one less exercise to squeeze into my lunch break gym session!
4i've been doing this "8 minute AM workout" which does two exercises every day (well, 6 days out of 7). it includes a few of these: squat, crunches & bent over row.
i am petite, but not strong, so my goal is to finally get strong enough to do push ups, and not the fake kind from the knees.
5Good List! I hate lunges more than ANYTHING! I had ankle surgery a while ago and for some reason lunges just always bug it. But I'm trying to do everything else! I'm going to go do some pushups today! I think I'll print this list out to remind myself!
6I swear by walking lunges!! They don't really feel like much as you're doing them, but the next day my bum and inner thighs are always sore (in the best way). I usually do them across my living room during commercial breaks, so about 2 or 3 minutes at a time. I haven't met any other exercise that can compete with them.
7i do all, but the last one - instead i do the one-arm dumbell row!
8I do all of those! I feel very accomplished now. Hehe. I need to incorporate more pushups and the last move into my workouts... I have terrible upper body strength...
9I am just starting out again so walking is number one with me, I use the elliptical to interval train [i guess]. I hope to keep on adding more exercises as I get stronger and fitter.
10Well I dont walk, I run and use the arc trainer...and I dont do intervals with the arc trainer really (like there is more resistance for 2 minutes and then less resistance..you understand) But I do everything else!
My pushups have improved so much. Although i think they should ahve a top 8 and add plank...my stomach has never been flatter and my posture has never been better since I have incorporated that
11I read about this the other day on WebMD....a very good list and luckily i do all of those exercises!! I cant always find time to go to the gym, so here at work i do lunges when i walk through our warehouse and squats in the bathroom (like someone above does too!!) I also take jaunts up and down the stairs as well...the push-ups you can do without even getting down on the floor. Just find a wall and stand a ways away from it and then do them against the wall. Works great! Then i go to the gym at night and do my walking/interval training as well as abs crunches.
Glad to know im doing the right stuff!!
12I knew lunges would be on the list. I"m another person who hates lunges! But I do them anyway.
The only one I'm not doing is the bent-over row. I'll have to add this one to my routine.
13Just started working out again and was looking for something like this thats straight to the point. My biggest problem is that I get board real fast and give up. Hopefully this will work....for the moment!
14VicVicVictooriaa......whats the plank??
Ditto on the lunges hurting my ankle. I sprained it a few months ago and lunges are never the same. Walking lunges hurt less though.
15Plank is where you hold a pushup position. Also can do them to the side. Works the muscles in your abs that stabilize.
16I do some of these! I do NOT like push ups or lunges!!!!!!!!!
17Whoo hoo! I do all seven except I run instead of walk!
18I love intervals!
19I do all of those...not all at once though. I usually alternate between squats and lunges and I also do additional core work on my stability ball.
20I do them all too except the bent over row. I tend to just use the row machine at the gym. I do lunges all day long and squats. Walking to the water color? Lunge all the way there. Refilling my tea? Lunge. Bathroom? Squat. Standing at the desk? Squat Squat squat.
21I wear pencil skirts. Lunging to get tea would look ridiculous.
22When I used to take classes I would do all of these! I just moved and checked out my new gym for classes, so hopefully they incorporate these moves as well.
Fit - I notice these exercises cover cardiovascular and muscular fitness, but what about flexibility? It's an area that is so often ignored and I'm wondering what are some good exercises to improve flexibility?
23I fit in things like this while watching tv or talking on the phone at night. I keeps me from wanting to snack when I do 100 crunches at 9pm!!
24I used to do 300 crunches a day in my ballet class but I don't find it challenging anymore. I like stabilizing exercises much better.
25All except for lunges
26Yay, I do them all!
27These are really basic exercises that we've been doing since PE in school. I really wanna hear something new.
28how does pilates measure up? I feel like it incorporates many of these, besides the walking.
29Woot! I do all but row.
30This is a great list. I think (barbell) squats are the best exercise ever, along with interval training.
31Burst or surge training, sometimes called interval training, is apparently really good for you! It's basically doing your maximum for a short period of time (20 secs.) then resting the same amount of time and so on. Look it up for more info, but I really recommend it!
