Are you a little skeptical about how hula hooping can keep you fit? I was too until I checked out HoopDance ($24.99). It's an
instructional fitness DVD that's perfect for beginners who want to learn how to move their bodies in a sexy way that tones and strengthens. Even if you can't keep a hoop in motion for more than two seconds (like me), Christabel Zamor, founder of HoopGirl, will give you tips on how to keep it spinning around your waist, and how to gracefully pick it up if it falls. Since I'm not much of a hula hooper, I spent the first 20 minutes trying to learn how to get this basic rhythm down, and I could feel my heart pumping, my abs, hips, and lower back working, and I was stripping off layers because I was working up a sweat. All that from the very first chapter of the video!

Christabel is sweet, extremely encouraging and inspirational, and very descriptive in her instructions, so I was making real progress in my HoopDance skills. It's amazing how learning something new can lift your spirit. I found myself calling to my husband saying, "Babe, it's not falling. It's not falling!" Needless to say, I was very proud of myself, and totally energized from this surprisingly tough workout.
If you're looking to add a little fun to your fitness routine, I'd definitely pick up a copy of HoopDance (through the HoopGirl website). It's great even if you can't hula hoop to save your life, but if you stick with it, you'll be able to keep that hoop in motion and learn some cool tricks too. Thanks to Sugar user thirtythreezero for recommending this DVD. Now I'm off to learn how to "Booty Bump."

i manage a corporate fitness center. we offer a once/month "specialty class" and after recently discovering this new trend, i found an instructor to come on-site and teach a "hoop dance" class. my members are really excited. i think i may have to try too!
1Is it a normal hoop or one of those special weighted ones? My roommate had a "fitness hoop" which was much heavier and was ribbed all around.
2Haha my mom hula hoops!!
3It's so FUNNY that you are posting a story on this b/c I workout with my daughter and she told me about this nworkout and I swear I did not believe her!
4I guess I know what new video I'll be getting to add to our collection.
I'm not so tempted, TBH
5It looks really fun once you get it down, but I think I'd just be frustrated until I picked it up because I'm such a perfectionist. Hula hooping in general sounds fun, though. I think I'll pick up a hoop.
6pixelhaze,
I have a hoop and DVD from Hoopnotica, and it's not a toy store hoop, but it's not one of those 6 lb. exercise hoops either. Mine weighs about 1.5 lbs. It's heavier and has a larger circumference for doing tricks.
7You can easily make a hula hoop using irrigation tubing (found at home depot or lowe's) and wrap it in fun colored tape. Usually a 3 ft circumference is perfect for tricks. You can also weight it by filling the tubing, but the weight of the tube is typically more than enough.
My friends and I took up hooping a few years back. It's so much fun and such a great way to stay in shape! I can't wait until the snow goes away so I can get back to it.
8no thanks!!!
9i think if they want to reach the millions they aspire to, they might have to tone down the raver clothing. i KNEW there was going to fire twirling on the clip somewhere - gross. (having been so mean, i will say i'm sure it is a lot of fun and a great work out. so, if it's your cup of tea then go for it)
10if that actually gets you in shape i think that is awesome- i am definately curious
11It's so interesting that I saw this because my daughter and I love to hula hoop and she's naturally talent at it. I was looking on Youtube for choreography to teach her, but this might be more fun!
12Your site is this what i'm looking for, i have bookmarked it for future referrence, best regards
13Your blog is very interresting for me, i will come back here..
14I luv doing it
