Looks like I am not alone when it comes to my love of french fries since they topped many users' lists for favorite cheat foods. A lot of you offered some great suggestions for healthy alternatives. Check these out:
- shopgrrl suggested boiled, salted, edamame because they're both starchy and salty.
- I can't wait to try these mustard-roasted potatoes that syako likes. They sound tasty.
- SublimeChica bakes her own spicy fries by adding Tony Cachere's Creole seasoning which is "spicy and oh-so salty." Adding flavor with spices and herbs is a great way to make food flavorful without adding extra calories.
If these suggestions don't work for you or fries are not your weakness, you can always follow Nitrobezene's advice – eat the food you love, just eat less of it. I like onesong's philosophy too – eat what you are craving, but eat healthy foods and healthy portions for the rest of the day.

I can definitely endorse syako's mustard-crusted potatoes. I made them this past week and they were great!
1Interesting alternatives.
2Yay. I'm glad you liked them tlsgirl! I also agree about having what you want but eating less.
The only thing I'd caution about Tony's seasoning is there's a TON of SODIUM in there, so use it sparingly.
3Can't wait to try the mustard-roasted potatoes. Thanks!
4Here's another EXCELLENT alternative: slice up some of those purplish turnips (you know, the one featured in your "what vegetable is this?" quiz the other day), spritz them with cooking spray, and bake them in the oven at 450 degrees until they're as crispy as they're going to get. Dunk in ketchup and enjoy!
53 words: sweet potato fries!
6Mmm, those mustard crusted potatoes were definitely awesome. And thanks for the warning, Syako, I forgot to add that!
7I make oven fries when I crave fries. I cut up a potato, put it in a baggie with 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp kosher salt, a sprinkle of chopped rosemary, and some garlic...shake it up, and spread them on a cookie sheet and bake them at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
