When most people think of yoga, they imagine someone in Lotus pose or this pose called Tree. This pose is all about challenging your sense of balance, but it also promotes good posture and opens your hips.

When doing this pose, it's important that you wear pants and not shorts, since the sole of your foot will end up sliding down your bare leg.
- To get into this pose, stand with your feet together. Put all your weight into your left foot and lift your right foot off the ground.
- Grab onto your right ankle with your right hand, flex your foot and place your heel as far up your leg as possible with your toes pointing down. Place your foot wherever it feels comfortable. It's OK to rest it on your knee if that's as high as your right foot will go.
- To keep your right foot planted, actively press your left leg against the sole of your right foot, and at the same time, press the sole of your right foot against your left leg. These two opposing forces will help to prevent your right foot from slipping down. Also draw your right knee back to open your hip. This also keeps your right foot in place.
- Press your palms together in front of your heart, and if it feels OK raise your arms straight over your head. Gaze softly at a still point in front of you to help you stay balanced.
- Keep your spine nice and long and tuck in your tailbone. Focus on keeping your belly still and breathing into your ribs. Stay here for five or more breaths and then do the other side.

I love the tree pose! You feel very strong after.
1Fit, I'm disappointed that you would allow sponsorship from a product that contains artificial sweeteners. With all the research out there that concludes that aspertame, splenda, etc. are essentially more harmful than sugar, I can't imagine how you could promote something like Diet Coke. I might have to rethink my support of this blog.
2I'm going to try this now, haha.
(I don't see any "heinous" Diet Coke ads anywhere...)
3Just tried this and really enjoyed the challenge. Thanks, Fit.
4this is one of my favorite poses!
5This video about Tree Pose is condoning a dangerous placement of the foot on the side of that joint. One jerky movement from getting off balance then trying to "save" yourself can lead to a quick press against the knee...and this can result in severe damage. Of course it's ok to "rest" the foot against the knee...but when balancing, the risk of a quick movement in an unintentional direction (like against the knee)is too great to warrant this recommendation. The amount of pressure it takes to blow out your knee and require surgery is about 2-3 lbs....which is a very small amount of pressure. Best advice should always be to place the foot well above the knee on the inner thigh....or below the knee against the area where the calf/shin bone is. I've been trained in beginning Mat Yoga and Pilates and felt fortunate to have received this sound advice from experienced teachers on this particular point. Please do what you can to modify/change this message and visual to prevent unnecessary injury to those who may view this video for their own guidance and practice.
6I'm having a lot of problems with this pose, placing my foot on the inner thigh anyway as is highly recommended above, because with gravity pulling my foot down it is painfully pulling on the skin of my thigh. Is my leg just not strong enough to keep itself up in the position? Or does anyone have any helpful hints on how I can alleviate this?
